Lo£ic

Before September 1st hits, and we get sucked into a new Eurovision season, we wanted to take the opportunity to give our readers a chance to get to know our team a bit better. There’s no other way to do this other than to do a series where we introduce ourselves. In this part, it is the turn of a new member of the writing team of That Eurovision Site to introduce himself : Loïc.

Hey there! I’m Loïc, I live in France (and yes, that’s FRAAAANCE! shouted with the drama of a Eurovision interval act). I’m an English teacher, the kind who unapologetically uses Eurovision as a gateway drug to grammar and good taste. Does it work? Hell yes. Every year, I recruit more glitter-loving, key-change-hungry pupils into the fandom. Resistance is futile.

How did I get into the Eurovision Song Contest?

I discovered Eurovision in the most random way possible. It was a boring Saturday night back in 2010, I was flipping through TV channels, desperately looking for something to kill time, when I stumbled upon a bizarre group performing some kind of Eurodance fever dream. There was a sax guy making strange gestures while, well… saxing.

I laughed, asked myself what kind of nonsense I was watching… But yeah, by the end of the night, I was still glued to the screen. Eurovision had me hooked, and I left that edition already craving for more.

What point did I consider myself as a Eurofan?

At first, it was just a fun yearly tradition. But in 2020, everything escalated : my friends and I started following national finals, getting hyped about every reveal, and diving deep into the fandom. We even began recording crazy (and deeply confidential, don’t even ask) parody videos, where we ranked songs and spoofed performances to survive that dreaded gap between the end of NF season and the start of rehearsals.

Then came the dream-come-true moment: experiencing Eurovision live : first in Malmö 2024, then Basel 2025. And yes… as expected, once you’ve tasted the magic in person, there’s no going back. You just want more and moooore.

How has my life changed since becoming a Eurofan?

That’s actually a really tough question. I’d say I’ve always been naturally curious when it comes to music. I love spending time singing on Smule, writing songs, and (more recently, recording them). Music has always been a passion, and I’ve always been hungry to discover new sounds, influences, and artists. In that sense, Eurovision has truly been a goldmine as it gives me access to hundreds of songs from all kinds of musical backgrounds every single year!

Beyond the music itself, Eurovision has become a central part of my daily life. I live the full journey from the very first national final in December all the way to the inevitable Post-Eurovision Depression after the Grand Final. And honestly? That PED is usually the perfect excuse to binge-watch every edition from 2010 to the present just to refresh my memory and maybe even update my yearly tops!

What are my favourite Eurovision songs and countries?

It’s so hard for me to answer that question. I’ve managed to find something to enjoy in at least one song from every participating country since I first started watching the contest in 2010. My playlists are as messy as my head when it comes to picking just one or two songs that truly stand out.

When it comes to my favorite countries at Eurovision, I’d give a special shoutout to Bulgaria (if we forget about Intention because, yeah… let’s just not talk about that…) which, in my opinion, was far too often overlooked! I’d also mention Ukraine, Sweden, and Hungary, who have consistently brought quality to the contest.

If I had to pick only a few songs among all the ones I love so much, I’d go for…

What are my favourite National Final songs?

I tried to make a shortlist of my favorite National Final songs to prepare for the Meet the Team video but, as always, I ended up being as chaotic as ever. Instead, I put together the ultimate Spotify playlist of the songs I still enjoy listening to to this day.

Apart from that, and because the song didn’t win its NF back in 2017, when I wasn’t yet following the NF seasons… I have to talk about Statements. Loreen had the perfect package : insane musicality, a pure artistic vision, haunting vocals… I’m still trying to figure out WHAT THE HELL (JUST) HAPPENED with that one ! The perfect definition of a robbed NF song !

What am I looking forward to in the next Eurovision season?

I honestly can’t wait to dive into the upcoming Eurovision season as part of the team, it still feels surreal ! On top of that, the idea of visiting Austria for the very first time with my best friend is just chef’s kiss… Now fingers crossed we actually get tickets for the shows ! And as a proud French guy, I’m so curious to see what’s next for us. I’m praying for fresh, exciting artists, or at least something bold and original, instead of trying to copy past successes. It’s time to let French music shine on its own terms !
