Other Highlights
There is way too much music released every month to cover in-depth, but here are some of the best and biggest new tracks from other Eurovision artists:
Karetus, CONAN OSIRIS, Isabel Silvestre com Vozes de Manhouce & Julio Pereira – “Moleirinha”
Favourites of the site Karetus are back in the round-up! The Portuguese duo teamed up this month with Conan Osiris, Isabel Silvestre, Vozes de Manhouce, and Julio Pereira for the excellent “Moleirinha” (Soft spot). Once again, this is some of the best fusion of traditional and folk music with modern electronic elements. The melody, the beat, the voices come together for a gorgeous, rich, impactful track that despite it’s roughly 3 minute runtime manages to go off, build, and meander at the same time. Incredibly close to being my track of the month.
S10 – “Buut Vrij”
The latest track by fav-of-the-roundup S10, “Buut Vrij”, is part of the national “Week against bullying” anti-bullying campaign. The track deals with the loneliness, sadness, and pressures that young people experience in our digital, always-online age. “Buut Vrij” refers to a rule in a Dutch variation of hide and seek where one of the hiders can stop hiding without losing by reaching a certain location and declaring themselves “buut vrij”. S10 states that she chose the phrase because, when everyone on the internet seems to have turned against you, you sometimes want to shout “buut vrij” so you no longer have to hide away and be alone.
Jeangu Macrooy – “Something Better”
After his successful run as Orpheus in the Amsterdam production of Hadestown, Jeangu Macrooy is on the lookout for “Something Better” for all his fellow hopeless romantics. This song feels like one of his most poppy tracks yet, although Jeangu’s penchant for alternative and indie elements obviously remain. The track is the sixth single of his upcoming fourth studio album, which is releasing this October.
Douwe Bob & MEAU – “Nog Even Blijven”
MEAU and former political exile Douwe Bob are asking if you can “Nog Even Blijven” (Stay A Little Longer). The track is a cute uptempo track about the push and pull in a relationship and wanting your partner to stay a little longer even when saying farewell is inevitable. This song marks the first time that Douwe Bob sings in Dutch on a studio track, having previously only done so at Beste Zangers, where he also sang together with MEAU.
PAENDA – “Good Life”
Meanwhile, Paenda is declaring that there is enough love between her and her lover to live a “Good Life”, despite the fiery moments. It’s a fun piece of dancepop that will get you moving in no time.
RUTH – “Dirty Love”, Funambulista, Kuve, Madbel, Ruth Lorenzo, Varry Brava, Viva Suecia, Walls – “ESTO ES MURCIA”
Spanish icon Ruth Lorenzo has two songs out this month. “Dirty Love” is a surprisingly earthy rock track courtesy of her rock music project RUTH. Eurofans will be familiar with the track, as she performed it live at this year’s Benidorm Fest.
The other song sees Ruth Lorenzo performing with a whole host of other artists, which includes Benidorm Fest alums Kuve and Varry Brava. “ESTO ES MURCIA” (THIS IS MURCIA) is a track that celebrates the city, which is celebrating its 1200th birthday. The track is an indie-poprock piece that feels tailor-made to play over the speakers at a food festival or some event like that.
Dilara Kazimova – “Zirvə”
“Zirvə” (Summit) is the title of the latest release by Dilara Kazimova. The 2014 Azerbaijani representative gives us some electrorock that feels a bit too fast to ascend a summit to, but it sure will keep you motivated to keep those feet moving.
Sudden Lights – “my melancholic baby”
The are back with their occasional English-language release! “my melancholic baby” is a very melancholic song and among Sudden Lights‘ slowest tracks, but not any less beautiful or engaging for it.
Vesna, Kateřina Marie Tichá – “Po vodě”
Czech singer-songwriter Kateřina Marie Tichá lends some of her pop sensibilities to Vesna on new collaborative effort “Po vodě” (After water). Lyrically, the song talks about letting things go, being free, and letting the flow of the water lead you to where you feel home.
alyona alyona – “А хто хейтить”
alyona alyona has a question for everyone: “А хто хейтить” (And who is hating?). The song is part of the soundtrack for the new Ukrainian comedy film 10 блогерят (10 bloggers). The track adds a rock edge to her sound, which suits her powerful vocal delivery beautifully.
