Latvia’s broadcaster LTV has confirmed that a total of 124 songs have been submitted to Supernova 2026, the country’s national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna next May.
Increased interest and genre diversity
According to Agnese Štrause-Kubliņa, head of entertainment and documentary content at Latvian Television:
“I’m glad that musicians appreciate Supernova. There are more songs than last year, which shows that the desire to bring Latvia’s name to the world, the Eurovision audience in the millions, and the achievements so far have obviously encouraged many to apply. In addition, the variety of genres is very wide – from country music to energetic rock compositions. Viewers will have the opportunity to experience exciting shows. Thank you to everyone for their hard work!”
Selection and judging process
From the 124 submissions, a panel of independent music and entertainment industry experts will now review the entries. Criteria include originality, arrangement, lyrical message, market potential, the performers’ vocal ability and their previous achievements. The jury’s identities will remain confidential until after the Eurovision final in May 2026 to avoid undue influence.
For the 2026 edition of Supernova, LTV has opted for a revamped structure. Two semi-finals are now scheduled for 31 January and 7 February, followed by the grand final on 14 February. From the two heats, ten songs will earn a spot in the final, with the possibility of one additional “wildcard” entry being added to bring the line-up to eleven competitors.
About Supernova
Except for 2021, when Samanta Tina was internally reselected following the cancellation of the 2020 contest, Latvia has always used a national final to select its Eurovision representative. Since 2015, this has been “Supernova”. In recent years, Supernova has usually been made up of two shows, a semi-final and a final. In recent years, around 15 artists have taken part in the semi-final, with around 10 artists advancing to the final. The final results of Supernova consist of a combination of a jury vote and the televote, at a 50-50% split.
The most recent Supernova winner was Tautumeitas, who performed “Bur man laimi”. Latvia successfully qualified from the second semi-final for the second year in a row. In the Grand Final, Tautumeitas finished in 13th place with 158 points. Of these points, 42 were from the public vote, and 116 were from the national juries.
