What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from Wer singt für Österreich?

Kittens (Philip): I was kinda a bit ready to dismiss this if it wasn’t for when that beat kicks in with the 8-bit riffs in the background! While I’m not 100% sure it’s a winner, it is certainly one of the most enjoyable of the selection, and has a lot of potential for creative staging, which could really lift it onto another level. A toetapper of a song and as it stands, easily accessible.

Rory (Cosmó): This song is definitely the standout of this rather meagre selection in my eyes. I am not a huge fan of this style of music, but there is something to like here, and I do really appreciate the lo-fi nature of this track, and a gritty style is exactly what Austria needs to show that being rough around the edges is just as valid as the polished popera we had last year.

Tetiana (Frevd): Something we could easly get in Dowload or Tons of Rock lineup. The punk band with very organic name to the hosting country definitely presenting themselves with strong visuals as extension to their song and a part of the band’s image. The dark and heavy sound express the difficult decisions and a lack of direction well and overall pleases a fellow metal head in a very good familiar way. My 12 points go to Frevd

And what were the teams thoughts on the national final as a whole?

Samantha: Now, after listening to the Austrian national selection songs I have only one question in mind : Austria, are you ok ?
All the songs are just very middle of the range and this lineup cannot be the best that Austria has to offer. When you win with something as big as “Wasted Love” it is hard to find a worthy a successor but this national final feels like Austria is telling us they don’t want to host again next year. I am all for having a national final and the people voting for what they send to ESC but Austria were doing so well with their internal selections that I am really underwhelmed by what is on offer here.

Austria’s Eurovision Journey

In 1957, Austria made their debut into the Eurovision Song Contest, where Bob Martin represented the landlocked nation with the song “Wohin, kleines Pony?”. At the close of voting, it managed to place 10th overall. Since their debut, Austria has participated 56 times (being in the final 49 times), and – before 2025 – had won the competition on two occasions in 1966 and 2014.

In 2025, Austria selected JJ internally to represent the nation in Basel with “Wasted Love”. Austria successfully qualified for the final, and went on to win the Contest with a total of 436 points. This gave Austria its third win in the Contest, eleven years after their previous victory.
