With all sixteen semi-finalists announced in Latvia, broadcaster LTV has announced an online battle. Ten songs are now vying for a coveted 17th spot in the semi-finals in Supernova 2022.
A supernova of returning artists
Ten songs are engaged in an online battle, with fans of Supernova spotting a host of returning acts. The most notable artist to feature in the online vote is Katrīna Dimanta. Dimanta is no stranger to either Supernova or Eurovision, as she represented Latvia as part of Aarzemnieki in 2014. Following that, the singer and violinist finished second in Supernova 2020, only behind the winner Samanta Tina.
Other names that fans may recognise include:
- Miks Galvanovskis, who participated in Supernova 2017, with “Runaway”, but did not qualify
- Toms Kalderauskis, who participated in Supernova 2017, with “We Won’t Back Down”, but did not qualify
- Atis Ieviņš, who has attempted to represent Latvia on four separate occasions, most recently in 2020.
- Rihards Bērziņš, who participated in Supernova 2015, with “Your Eyes”, but failed to make it to the final
- Marta Ritova, who participated in Eurodziesma 2013, with “I Am Who I Am”, finishing in 3rd place.
- Antra Stafecka, who has tried to represent Latvia three times, most recently in 2020.
Super seventeen
The current Supernova 2022 online battle to determine the 17th participant is running from January 10th to 15th. Whoever wins the online vote will win the final golden ticket to take part in the national selection.
Fans from all over the world can decide who the 17th participant can be, subject to a vote validation. To listen to all ten competing songs and cast your vote, follow this link.
Only one semi-final will take place for the already revealed songs, which were unveiled by LTV last week. All participating songs will need to qualify from the semi-final on February 5th. Following this show, those who make it through to the final will perform one last time on February 12th. The winner of the Supernova final will then go on to represent Latvia in Turin in May.
Latvia’s history in Eurovision
Latvia made their Eurovision debut in 2000, finishing 3rd with “My Star” by Brainstorm. They have performed at every contest since and managed to win in 2002. Marie N sang “I Wanna,” scoring 176 points and bringing Eurovision to Riga in the process. Latvia also managed to finish in the top 10 two more times, in 2005 and 2015. Latvia’s most recent entry on the Eurovision stage was Samanta Tīna, who performed “The Moon Is Rising.” The song failed to qualify, finishing 17th in its semi-final.
