Romania is continuing their preparations for Selecția Națională 2023. As artists prep for the final on the 11th of February, Rory speaks to Steven Roho, Gabriela and Formaţia Albatros. They are vying to represent Romania in Liverpool with their song “Lele”.

Together, Steven Roho, Gabriela, Formaţia Albatros and Rory talk about the inspiration behind their song “Lele”. They also talk about Eurovision, Steven’s musical side project and how the collaboration is more like a family working together.

About Steven Roho, Gabriela and Formaţia Albatros
Steven Roho is the stage name of Alex Rosu, a 30-year-old singer, songwriter and producer from Romania. A native of Bucharest, Rosu first became involved in music production at the age of 18. Since then, he has written and performed on numerous tracks with success across the musical charts in Romania. Gabriela Lazar is new to the Romanian music scene, first participating on Romania’s edition of the X Factor. She has been collaborating with Rosu to write her own music since 2022.
Formaţia Albatros is a long-running band first established in the 1990s. The band has had a string of hits in Romania, and are one of the most successful bands in the country, as they constantly adapt their unique sound with changing trends. Their Eurovision entry – “Lele” – is written by Rosu, Lazar and Formaţia Albatros themselves.
Romania’s Eurovision Journey
Romania joined the Eurovision family in the Eastern wave of enlargement, making their debut in 1994. Their entry – Dan Bittman’s “Dincolo de nori” – finished in 21st place with a total of 14 points. At the introduction of semi-finals, Romania found their stride and were present in every Eurovision final until 2018. Romania’s best result is third place, scored twice in 2005 and 2010 respectively.
In 2022, Romania was represented by WRS with his song – “Llámame”. Performing at the second semi-final in Turin, Romania qualified for the final for the first time since 2017. At the close of voting in the final, Romania finished 18th in a field of 25, scoring 65 points.
