🇸🇮 TES Previews: Who are Joker Out?

Eurovision in Liverpool is now less than a month away. In the run-up to rehearsals we will be getting to know a little more about this year’s artists, their discography and their Eurovision journey so far. The next act we will be previewing is Slovenia’s Joker Out.

Joker Out’s Eurovision journey so far….

Slovene broadcaster RTVSLO chose to take a different approach to their Eurovision selection for 2023. For the first time in ten years, their representative was not selected through national final EMA (including 2021 returnee Ana Soklič). Instead, Joker Out were chosen through an internal selection, announced in December 2022. Their song, “Carpe Diem”, was first presented to the world in February 2023 on special broadcast Misija Liverpool.

Joker Out are set to perform tenth during the second semi-final on the 11th of May. They will be following Poland and preceding Georgia, hoping to qualify for the final.

Joker Out were one of the most active acts on this year’s pre-party circuit, performing at Barcelona Eurovision Party, the Polish Eurovision Party, Israel Calling, Madrid Pre-PartyES, Eurovision In Concert and London Eurovision Party. They have been documenting their Eurovision journey on their YouTube channel in the Carpe Diem series.

While at Eurovision in Concert, Angus had the chance to speak more with Joker Out! Watch their interview here!

What do we think of “Carpe Diem”

The team at That Eurovision Site has been doing their reviews for this year’s contest. Angus and Janek gave their thoughts on “Carpe Diem”, which you can see here.

Who are Joker Out?

Indie rock band Joker Out formed in 2016, following the break ups of Apokalipsa and Buržuazija. Their current line up consists of lead singer Bojan Cvjetićanin, guitarists Kris Guštin and Jan Peteh, drummer Jure Maček and bassist Nace Jordan. Some members of the group are still students alongside their musical careers.

In 2017, the band won the fourth season of the Špil league (a competition for student musicians). They then begun to perform at festivals across the country, and release the first tracks from Umazane misli, which would become their first album in 2021. In 2019, they returned following an 8-month hiatus to hold their first ever solo concert – at Ljubljana Castle.

The band’s success has not stopped there. In 2020, the group were awarded the Zlata piščal for Newcomer of the Year, and the award for Artist of the Year in 2021. They are currently nominated for the same award again for 2023.

2022 saw the release of their second album, Demoni. This was accompanied by a single of the same name, the band’s first song in Serbian. Recently, the band have released a collaboration with rock legend Elvis Costello, “New Wave”.

“Carpe Diem” has lyrics by Cvjetićanin, while the music is composed by all members of the group. In an interview with Yorkshire Times, they described the song as capturing their biggest desires at the time of writing: “to dance all night, make love and play video games”.

Slovenia’s Eurovision journey

In 1993, Slovenia made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest. Their first artist was 1X Band with the song “Tih deževen dan”, which placed 22nd. Since their debut, they have participated 26 times (15 of which, where they qualified for the Grand Final.)

Slovenia’s recent Eurovision participation, saw them being represented by LPS. The band represented Slovenia with the song “Disko”. At the close of voting, LPS placed 18th in the first semi-final; receiving 15 points from the jury and televoters, finishing last in the semi-final.
