Now That’s What I Call… The Extended Eurovision Universe
As any Eurovision megafan knows, Eurovision neither starts nor ends with the main contest. From National Final season introducing the world to new and exciting artists, to former Junior Eurovision artists, to the big-name songwriters and producers that work behind the scenes, people from all over the music industry make Eurovision the amazing thing that it is. Here are some of the best new releases by Eurovision-adjacent acts:
Annalisa – “Ragazza Sola”
Let’s send a woman to Eurovision this year, okay Italy? Because all of them have been absolutely killing it. Latest evidence to that point is the new track by Annalisa: “Ragazza Sola” (Lonely Girl). A thumping Italian poprock offering that is equally anthemic and emotional. Annalisa cowrote the track with Davide Simonetta (“Due Vite”) and Alessandro Raina (Tananai’s “Sesso Occasionale”).
Jann – “The Letter”
Although the “Gladiator” didn’t leave the TbsE!WhnE arena as a winner, Jann now presents us “The Letter”. Dark, dramatic, and going from understated to truly over the top on a coin flip: it’s a true experience, and a promising one for further releases from the young Pole.
Attic Stories – “See You In Hell” (feat. Lonely Spring)
It’s two German pop-punk bands on one track saying they’ll “See You In Hell”. German national finalists Lonely Spring feature on the new track by female-fronted band Attic Stories. The track is a classic pop-punk track, with everything that entails. Yes, including grainy music video! Definite recommend for fans of the genre (like me).
Maël & Jonas – “Overseas”
Maël & Jonas hail from the 2022 German final, but now they’re singing about the person they’re close to being “Overseas”. It’s a delightful little poprock track that deserves more airplay than it is going to get.
Petunija – “NETAVOVASARA” (ft. Konstantinas Lilas)
Lithuania is a perennial, if not always common, favourite in this round-up. First of two 2023 finalists from there this month is Petunija, who collabed with Konstantinas Lilas for new track “NETAVOVASARA” (AND THOSE WHO ARE LEFT). A driving beat pushes this stunning, melancholic altpop track forward, with Konstantinas’ rap verse buidling even more of an atmosphere. “NETAVOVASARA” is the first track of Petunija’s upcoming EP, set to be released November 23rd.
Patrisha – “Tikai savā iztēlē”
Taking the opposite route than her fellow PiN 2023 contestant and going decidedly more mainstream with her new single is Patrisha. “Tikai savā iztēlē” (Only in your imagination) is a low key banger though, which deals with loving someone in imagination, because you can’t actually be with them.
Raiven ft. Helena Blagne – “Ikona”
Raiven is, let’s be honest, a bit of an “Ikona” (Icon). The three-time Slovenian finalist teams up with vocalist Helena Blagne for this dramatic track that mixes dark pop beats with operatic and some South Slavic influences.
Eugenia Nicolae – “Copil Hoinar”
Romania’s Eugenia Nicolae brings us some more of her signature folkpop with new track “Copil Hoinar” (Wandering Child). The sweeping song calls on us to reconnect with nature, accepting that beautiful takes time and becoming a wandering child.
Mika – “C’est la Vie”
Mika just announced and started selling tickets for his upcoming European tour, and that calls for new music, of course! “C’est la Vie” (That is the Life) of a pop star and former Eurovision host, after all. The French language track is a catchy disco-pop tune about celebrating life, despite (or even because of) what life throws at you.
Timbaland, Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake – “Keep Going Up”
The legend that is Nelly Furtado teams up again with Timbaland and Justin Timberlake, a whole 26 years after their joint mega hit “Give It To Me”. The dance pop/R&B track is exactly what one might expect of the three of them, and has been doing fairly well worldwide. Still wild to think that of the three, it actually was Timberlake to have some kind of Eurovision involvement. You just know that Furtado would absolutely kill as an interval artist.
Darin – “En annan jag” (LP)
Last month I wrote about Darin’s single “Satellit,” and now his new album “En annan jag” (Another me) is here! The album is his fifth number 1 album in a row on the Swedish charts and his 8th total to top the charts. “En annan jag” is a more personal turn for the Swede, showing some vulnerability without ditching the confident sound he is known for.
Oscar Zia – “Tiotusen”
It seems that the only thing that Melfest mainstay (be it contestant or host) Oscar Zia is unable to do is sit still! You can find out more about his latest release “Tiotusen” (Ten thousand) below:
