Following their Junior Eurovision debut in 2023, Estonia’s ERR has announced their intention to continue competing at the contest, which will likely be held in France again in 2024.

Estonia’s long-term vision

Speaking to ESCInsight’s Ben Robertson, head of delegation Laura Kรตrvits described Estonia’s Junior Eurovision participation as a way to increase visibility for Estonia’s young singers. Estonia has, since 1992, hosted Tรคhtede Lava, a singing competition for young singers aged three to fifteen years old. Many Estonian Eurovision contestants, including Birgit (2013) and Ines (2003), got their start on this show; ERR intends to formalize the Eurovision connection. In the future, the winner of Tรคhtede Lava will go to Junior Eurovision.

While financing both Eurovision and Junior Eurovision may be a struggle for small-country broadcasters like ERR, Kรตrvits believes it’s worth the cost. “We do this for our young people,” she told Robertson.

Meanwhile, Estonia’s Junior Eurovision debutant contestant Arhanna has herself won Tรคhtede Lava. She won the young singer bracket in 2019 and won the jury vote in 2022.

Estonia’s Junior Eurovision journey

Estonia debuted at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2023. The Baltic nation was represented by Arhanna in Nice, France, with the song “Hoiame Kokku”. At the close of voting in Nice, Arhanna received 49 points in total. Estonia gained 6 points from the national juries, while getting 43 points from the online voting. They ultimately placed 15th.
