What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from the Final of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2024?
Kittens (“Sirena”): Oh I do love a banger. And this may be very simple but it works very effectively. While the performance from the selection shows may have been rough around the edges, you can still see the joy of this catchy song shining through, and hopefully they’ve had some time to iron out the kinks. Nice to see a bit of Maltese in the lyrics as well – one to get stuck in your head for weeks for sure!
Rory (“MARA”): Malta’s selection is known for being one of two extremes – high-octane bangers or more open and emotional ballads. MARA definitely a banger, but offers a more mid-tempo dance vibe to it with a drop that only few songs could dream of. I’m sure this will be a moment on stage and it’s been a while since Malta went with a song like this – why not give it a go!
Lewis (“Venom”): I love this entry by Miriana Conte! There is such an overabundance of electronic music nower days that usually that sort of influence in entries does nothing for me. Here, it’s different. Maybe its the haunting elements in the instrumentation, and the demonic choir layers create such an incredible ambience that contrasts the pop, soul vocals that Miriana is offering. She is in her element during her high belts. Her attitude comes through throughout the song and her stage presence is amazing. V E N O M!
Malta’s Eurovision Journey
Malta made its Eurovision debut in 1971, with Joe Grech performing “Marija I-Maltija” (Maria the Maltese Lass), finishing 18th with 52 points. Malta did not participate in Eurovision from 1975 until 1991. That year they returned with the song “Could It Be” by Paul Giordimaina and Georgina, finishing 12th with 32 points. Since then, Malta has been at every Eurovision and finished in the top 10 an impressive 12 times. Their best result so far is second place, which they’ve achieved twice. The first time was in 2002, when Ira Losco sang “7th Wonder,” and the second time in 2005 with Chiara’s “Angel.”
Malta’s most recent Eurovision entry was The Busker, singing his song “Dance (Our Own Party)”. Performing during the first semi-final in Liverpool, the band scored 3 points from the televote, earning 15th place and therefore, not qualifying for the final.
