As we now have the songs competing for this year’s competition in Malmö, the team at That Eurovision Site will be reacting to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2024. The next entry we will be reacting to is Spain, who will be competing in this year’s competition with “ZORRA” by Nebulossa.

Our thoughts on “Zorra”

In this series, we will be providing our opinions in two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst three other members will be giving their written opinion on the entry. Tim will be on the main seat and will be giving his reaction to “Zorra” .

What did the other members of the team think of “Zorra”?

Kittens : This completely passed me by on the recording but it’s a great example of a song absolutely elevated by the live performance and staging. I also think it’s a song that’s really elevated by an audience, and we’ll see that well in Malmö. I’m really glad to see these two bringing their energy, but I hope that the message of the song doesn’t get lost, as it’s an important part of the appeal here. This has slowly sneaked down my rankings as other songs have been selected but remains in my top – the mood of this in any selected euroclub shows that commercial appeal.

Jazzi: I was a bit in shock when this was selected, however it has grown on me. I really like to see that, although Nebulossa are older, they can still make it to the Eurovision stage. I feel it gives hope to people of a older age that they can still make it at Eurovision too. I feel this will attract a televote in May. I do worry how juries will respond to this song in the final; however, I do think Europe will get behind it because the stage show really is done so so well. Again I think they should keep it as similar to the national final as possible as j feel their staging was a big factor in getting them the win at Benidorm Fest.

Spain’s Eurovision Journey

Spain debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 with Conchita Bautista’s “Estando Contigo”. The country earned its first win in 1968 with Massiel’s “La La La”, and won again in 1969 with Salome’s “Vivo Cantando” in an infamous four-way tie. Although they have yet to win again, Spain earned several 2nd place finishes, most famously with Mocedades’ “Eres tu” in 1973 and Anabel Conde’s “Vuelve conmigo” in 1996.

In 2023, Spain selected Blanca Paloma to carry on the success of Chanel in 2022. As part of the Big 5, Blanca Paloma did not need to qualify to the Grand Final from the semi-finals. At the close of voting, her song “EAEA” finished 17th, with a total of 100 points. Of these, 95 points came from the jury, whilst 5 came from the televote.
