šŸ† That Eurovision Jury 2024 – Part 6

That Eurovision Jury
That Eurovision Jury

With the rehearsals for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest starting in just a few weeks, we thought we’d have a little go at trying to make our own jury scores for this year’s contest. While there’s no way to accurately predict what the juries or televotes will decide next month, we can say how we would vote if we were jurors.

No Rules! (*okay we do have to have some rules)

The 36 countries competing this year have been randomly sorted into seven segments. Each segment will be voted on by 5 jurors. They have assessed based on six categories: Melodic Impact, Artist Presence, Individuality, Attention Drawing, Vocal Fit, and Lyrical Impact. Exact specifications of these criteria can be found below. Our five jurors have given a score of 1 to 5 on each of the six topics, allowing each juror to give a maximum of 30 points to each song. In total there are up to 150 points available to each song. Once every song and score has been presented a full breakdown with a ranking of all 36 of this year’s entries.

Additionally, all of our jurors were asked to give one positive, and one negative comment about each song in a constructive manner. As well as opinions we have also guest Jurors from other outlets voicing their opinions. In line with our current editorial policy Israel will not be reviewed as part of this jury. You can read more about our stance here.

These are our personal opinions based on the criteria outlined. This is in no way attempt to accurately predict what will be the outcome of live shows and should not be taken as such.

Countries And Jurors For Part Six

The six countries that make up the sixth segment being voted on are: Luxembourg, France, Italy, Austria, Armenia, and Poland.

The jurors voting in this segment are: Tim, Shiloh, Jazzi, and Ben. Joining as a guest is ESCPlus‘ Aitor.

Voting Criteria

Criteria 1: Melodic Impact

How lasting is the beat of the track. The more the beat stays, the higher the ranking.

Criteria 2: Artist’s Presence

If a national final is used, how their presence on stage affected the performance. If an internal selection was used, and no pre-party of other live footage is available then their presence is assessed based on their history.

Criteria 3: Individuality

How different is the song compared to the rest of the acts participating this year.

Criteria 4: Attention Drawing

How drawn in are you by the song. Are you waiting for it to finish, or completely engrossed.

Criteria 5: Vocal Fit

Assessing the vocal fit of the artist to the song rather than judging their technical ability in full. ie. X singer may have a wider range to Y singer, though singer Y may utilise the range better in their song and therefore should be ranked higher than X.

Criteria 6: Lyrical Impact

How lasting are the lyrics to you. Has listening to it left you singing the song.

Positives

Tim: Tali’s got great vocals, she really sells the song, and like the integration of the French language within the song.

Shiloh: Tali’s voice has a nice vibrato in some parts that helps her stand out.

Jazzi: Vocally, the song really suits Tali’s voice, she isn’t attempting any notes she cannot hit, which is something artists sometimes do do. I also think Tali’s tone in her voice is also perfect for a song like this and she has show. In the Luxembourg Song Contest she can sing this song live.

Ben: I like it isnt just in English.

Aitor: mix of Latin/Middle Eastern sounds + perfect blend of French and English

Negatives

Tim: There are times where I feel the song is a little middle of the road, and there is no impact.

Shiloh: The rhythmic interplay between the vocal and instrumental feels really, really awkward. I have a hard time keeping track of where the beat is at the beginning of the song.

Jazzi: I am sorry to say, I do just find this a really weak entry. The melody is forgettable, I don’t think Tali particularly stands out either on stage or in the studio version. I struggle to keep my attention with this for the full three minutes. I do think there is work that can be done with this in terms of a stage show but right now I just find this a bit generic and plain as far as girl bops go.

Ben: This song doesn’t give any stand out moment and just feels like a soulless pop song.

Aitor: revamp didn’t elevate the song as much as expected and there are better pop bangers

France Slimane – Mon Amour

Total score: 118.5

Positives

Tim: Researching through the lyrics, I like the in depth meaning and the emotions that Slimane brings as he performs the song.

Shiloh: I love the contrasts between Slimane’s softer vocals in the beginning and more powerful singing later on. It gives the song a great emotional build.

Jazzi: Technically both in the studio, and even more so live it is clear Slimane has an excellent voice. The song in a melodic sense builds really nicely as it goes on from this soft quiet ballad to a massive crescendo towards the end, Slimane’s vocals also help build the foundations for this song throughout

Ben: His vocals are out of this world, and the melody left me speechless on first listen.

Aitor: amazing voice and stage presence, enchanting

Negatives

Tim: Generalisation being a ā€˜typical French entry’, and within the first minute people might get put off by the song.

Shiloh: While it’s a beautiful song, there isn’t too much about the songwriting that makes it stand out among other entries.

Jazzi: I have marked this down for individuality, as while Slimane has an amazing voice and he can really perform this. I do feel it is a more run of the mill French ballad, however in terms of Eurovision in May I don’t think this will effect their overall result too much.

Ben: This is another entry in a long line of French chanson ballads, and the genre is starting to get tired.

Aitor: quite flat and doesn’t grow, very repetitive for France, always bringing the same genre

Positives

Tim: Finally for the first time in ages, Italy sends a woman to Eurovision, and I really like how it is something different and unique that they are sending.

Shiloh: Her voice definitely has the right tone to deliver the rap parts, they sound sharp and sassy.

Jazzi: This is one of the strongest songs of the season and it has many good points, changes in the melody, which keeps the audience interested throughout without being too messy. Angelina is an amazing engaging performer they ā€œfunā€ in this song really comes out whether it’s seeing her perform it live or in the music video.

Ben: Angelina performs the hell out of the song and it is something very different for Italy.

Aitor: unique, amazing stage presence and flawless vocals

Negatives

Tim: Too avant garde for the mainstream public.

Shiloh: This might be controversial, but I just get so little personality from Angelina. She sounds great but her visual delivery is so lifeless.

Jazzi: One of my only issues is when reading the English translation of the lyrics I am a little unclear about what the message of the song is? Is she bored of society? Is she bored of her life and wants to explore more? All I get is that she’s bored of something but am unclear on what that is. I feel even this is harsh I struggled from a negative with this one.

Ben: The song errs on the side of being a too radio friendly, and it will need a great stage performance to stand out from the crowd.

Aitor: don’t think of Italy straight away?

Positives

Tim: ā€œWe Will Raveā€ is very upbeat, fun and an earworm that it only takes one listen for you to be hooked.

Shiloh: So many catchy melodies here! I especially love the ā€œso I go go go where the broken-hearted goā€ part.Ā

Jazzi: This will really attract the audience’s attention in May, this is fun this is dancey and Kaleen does know how to put on a show. The dance breakdowns will be loved a lot of Eurofans who just want to have a good time.

Ben: The melody is extremely catchy. After one listen you already have the chorus stuck in your head.

Aitor: best banger of the year, amazing dance voices, perfect for euroclub

Negatives

Tim: The song is too upbeat that it might be difficult to match the vocal capability from the studio cut to the live performance in Malmƶ.

Shiloh: Kaleen’s stage presence is just a little too happy for so fierce a song, and it’s jarring.

Jazzi: Vocally the only live performance we have seen there have been issues with some of the notes, but nothing a little backing wouldn’t fix. Another issue I have found is Kaleen’s stage presence I do feel particularly in the music video she could be giving a song as upbeat and dancey a bit more umph with her body language, although this was much improved at Pre-Party ES this is definitely still something to be worked on.

Ben: The lyrics, while catchy, are quite meaningless. EDM tracks seem to have historically not performed that well, and I fear this could suffer the same fate.

Aitor: scared of the live, hope she is preparing well to deliver and even more energetic and complex dance number than at properties but still hitting the notes and still being able to breathe

Positives

Tim: I like the inclusion of the instruments, the Armenian language and their presence, which I hope can be translated on to the stage in Malmƶ.

Shiloh: So fun and so joyful! The composition really delivers on the emotions, it’s whimsical and positive.

Jazzi: There is a lot that is good about this, the duos artist presence in the music video you can tell they are just having the greatest time performing this, and you can also feel that just listening to the studio track, there is just something very joyful and fun about this.

Ben: I love the traditional sounds so much and also love that they are singing in Armenian.

Aitor: the most unique and ethnic of this year

Negatives

Tim: It might have a difficulty standing out with the other upbeat entries.

Shiloh: We don’t have many live videos at the time I’m writing this, but from what I can tell, the singer’s stage presence is really timid. I don’t know if she’ll be able to command a big stage.

Jazzi: Again, really struggled with a real negative here, I guess the lyrics as there’s just not much of them, they do have a spare 40 seconds so perhaps they could add a second verse in. Although from a melodic POV I am unsure if it needs it. I guess the only worry is is this song a bit repetitive and could it lose the audience’s interest? I am unsure.

Ben: It isn’t the most approachable of songs, and mignt not connect with enough viewers.

Aitor: message can’t get lost and depending on the stage, can feel repetitive by the end

Total score: 104

Positives

Tim: It is my style of music, I like the build up and Luna’s vocals that makes her sound a bit like Dotter.

Shiloh: This is refreshingly individual; we don’t get much of this mystical pop music at Eurovision and I for one am here for it.

Jazzi: This song really suits Luna’s voice and her tone. This is upbeat but still really works for Luna’s delicate tone. I enjoy listening to this song for that reason. Luna’s styling also really makes her stand out hence high artist presence score.

Ben: Luna has a very good voice.

Aitor: strong message and potential for unique and interesting staging

Negatives

Tim: it’s a bit too middle of the road. I would not skip it, but it just doesn’t go anywhere and there’s a lack of oomph.

Shiloh: From the live videos I’ve seen, Luna is overacting a little bit. Too much stage presence for a song that, in my opinion, needs more subtlety.

Jazzi: There are aspects of this that could be a tad forgettable in this field of songs. The melody is nice but I do feel it doesn’t really go anywhere as the song goes on it does stay a little one note. Compared to other songs this song doesn’t grab my attention as much as others this year. I do worry this falls into a category of while it’s nice is it a little too nice.

Ben: It sounds like something you would hear on the radio but does nothing to make you want to pull out your phone and vote for it.

Aitor: vocals can be flat at times
