As the songs competing for this year’s competition in Basel continue to be selected, the team at That Eurovision Site will react to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2025. The final entry we will react to is France, which will be competing in this year’s competition with “maman” by Louane.

Our thoughts on “maman”

In this series, we will provide our opinions via two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst up to three members will give their written opinion on the entry. Rory will be on the main seat and will be showing his reaction to “maman”

What did the other team members think of “maman”?

Daniel: Sometimes the wait really is worth it, this is absolutely stunning. France get flak sometimes for more often than not going down the chanson route, but when this is the level of quality that’s on offer, why on earth would they send anything else? Louane’s vocals are beautiful, the song is fantastic and the lyrics are packing the hardest of emotional punches. France clearly think they’re onto a winner here, they wouldn’t debut it at a crucial rugby match in front of 80,000 people if they didn’t fancy their chances, so I can only assume they’re cooking up something incredibly special in the staging department to give this song everything it deserves. Perhaps we should all be practising our French.

Euan: I could wax lyrical about the majestic nature of the presentation for this, and I will. Standing in front of the Stade de France, suspended in the air, with pyro going off right beside her, and all the while managing to belt out ‘maman’ with perfect vocals, and conveying the emotion across perfectly is the most amazing thing I’ve witnessed in the last 15 national final seasons I’ve seen. This stands out head and shoulders ahead in this year’s field. There’s an instant feeling of authenticity with ‘maman’ that this year is lacking, which makes it’s position at the top of the community scoreboards and odds make so much sense.

Tim: When Louane was first rumored for Eurovision 2025, I did listen to one of her singles “solo”, and I thought okay, this is interesting. However, when it came to Eurovision, I did not expect that the song would have been right under our noses for some time. Regardless, I do think that France sending something that is authentic to the artist, is one of the key things that would be needed in order to do well, and I can already feel how close France is to achieving another win at the contest.
