As the songs competing for this year’s competition in Basel continue to be selected, the team at That Eurovision Site will react to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2025. The next entry we will react to is Georgia, which will be competing in this year’s competition with “Freedom” by Mariam Shengelia.

Our thoughts on “Freedom”

In this series, we will provide our opinions via two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst up to three members will give their written opinion on the entry. Tim will be on the main seat and will be showing his reaction to “Freedom”

What did the other team members think of “Freedom”?

Molly: This song is a nice, simple ballad, and her voice suits it. However, it cuts off very abruptly, and the song really needed more to it. The staging could be very interesting, but in a sea of other ballads, I worry that this one will be overshadowed within Eurovision. They will need to pull out a lot to make this song stand out against its competition, not just the MV’s staging.

Jonathan: This is a song in the grand tradition of female-fronted ballads in Eurovision. However, its delivery lets down its ambition and it lacks the impact and staying power to stand out in a more diverse and musically progressive modern Eurovision line-up.

Georgia’s Eurovision Journey

Georgia’s history in Eurovision has been mixed since they began competing in 2007, represented by Sopho Khalvashi with “Visionary Dream”. Their highest placements – both coming in 9th – were achieved in 2010 and 2011, with Sopho Niharadze performing Shine and Eldrine with One More Day. They have not qualified for the final since 2016, where they were represented by Nika Kocharov & Young Georgian Lolitaz with Midnight Gold.

For 2024, former American Idol contestant Nutsa Buzaladze represented Georgia with her song “Firefighter”. In Malmö, Georgia qualified for the Grand Final for the first time since 2016. In the Grand Final Nutsa received 34 points, 19 of these were from the televoters, while the other 15 were from the national juries.
