Eurovision Song Contest movie is being turned into a sequel

A musical adaptation of the official Eurovision Song Contest movie has been announced. Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga – The Musical is now in development and will premiere soon.

From Húsavík to Broadway – the Eurovision musical journey

Inspired by the Eurovision Song Contest itself; thanks to Will Ferrell’s deep love for the competition; Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga was released on Netflix in 2020. Though reviews were mixed, the film earned a Grammy Nomination for Best Soundtrack and an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song with Húsavík (My Hometown).

Many Eurovision fans hoped for a full-circle moment, with Molly Sandén (who voiced the character of Sigrit, represented Sweden at Junior Eurovision 2006 and competed in 2009, 2012 and 2015 in the Melodifestivalen) performing Húsavík live at the contest. Though that dream never materialized, Hannes Óli Ágústsson did reprise his iconic role as Olaf Yohansson during the 2021 final, once again demanding to “play Ja Ja Ding Dong!”

Since then, the song has taken on a cult life of its own, even being covered by Norway’s Tix (2021) and Iceland’s Væb (2025).

Broadway gets a dose of Eurovision madness

If many Eurofans were hoping for a sequel to the movie, they’ll have to log off Netflix and head to Broadway to get a fresh dose of Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Indeed, Will Ferrell recently announced that the film will be adapted into a stage musical. Speaking on the news, the actor said:

We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway. The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.

The Broadway adaptation will once again be written by Will Ferrell and Harper Steele, who co-wrote the original movie. They will be joined by Anthony King as co-writer for the stage version, while Alex Timbers takes on directing duties. Giving his thoughts on the move, Timbers said:

Will Ferrell and Harper Steele are my comedy heroes. When I first saw their joyful Eurovision movie during the pandemic, it lifted spirits during a very dark time. With this stage adaptation, I can’t wait to bring that same mix of heart, spectacle, irreverence, and awe to audiences around the world.

On the musical side, Savan Kotecha – behind some of Ariana Grande’s biggest hits, as well as chart-topping song likes “One More Night” (Maroon 5), “Can’t Feel My Face” (The Weeknd), “If U Seek Amy” (Britney Spears), and Love Me Like You Do (Ellie Goulding) – will be in charge of the soundtrack.
