Now That’s What I Call… The Extended Eurovision Universe
As Eurovision fans (and some who aren’t) know, Eurovision neither starts nor ends with the main contest. From National Final season introducing the world to new and exciting artists, to former Junior Eurovision artists, to the big- and small-name songwriters and producers that work behind the scenes, people from all over the music industry make Eurovision the amazing thing that it is. Here is some of the best new music by Eurovision-adjacent acts.
Night Tapes – “Storm”
“portals//polarities”, the debut album by Night Tapes, is coming out next month. And that is as good an excuse as any for the group, fronted by Eesti Laul star Iiris Vesik, to drop another single. “Storm” is a gorgeously slice of electronica-inspired dream pop, a bit more anthemic perhaps than the almost trip hop-esque “babygirl (like n01 else)” from April. Excellent stuff and my song of the month!
Meelik – “Vahele”
There is new music by Meelik, so of course they are back in the round-up. “Vahele” (Between) fits right in with the rest of their discography. It’s energetic, always on the edge of falling apart, and just a really good time to listen to.
Justė Baradulinaitė – “Atleisk, jei gali”
Speaking of dreamy albeit of the singer-songwriter variety: “Atleisk, jei gali” (Forgive me, if you can). Justė Baradulinaitė treats us this month to a truly lovely, melancholic-yet-hopeful sounding piece of music. An excellent song to sway to in your garden with a beer in hand and some slight regret on your mind.
SHWR x PETUNIJA – “Tarytu Bėjo”
So here is a collab I never expected. SHWR (then Shower) were my winners in Lithuania’s 2024 final, and they team up with fave-of-the-round-up Petunija. This track sees SHWR pull back a bit sonically while Petunija gives a bit more, meeting halfway to create something very pleasing to the ear. Simultaneously unlike anything yet instantly familiar, a great track!
Carlinhos Antunes, Susana Travassos – “Viver é Perigoso Demais”
We leave the Baltics for our regularly scheduled Portuguese stop. This month our train, plane, bus, or other vehicle of choice halts at Susana Travassos, who shows up on this song by Carlinhos Antunes. The Portuguese singer-songwriter sings gorgeously yet hauntingly over this song by the Brazilian musician about how “Viver é Perigoso Demais” (Living is Too Dangerous). While this version is new, the song is anything but. Already back in 2016 an official, albeit shorter, live version was available on YouTube.
Maryna Krut feat. Phil it – “Баштани”
We hop back aboard and go across Europe to Ukraine where we are greeted by Maryna Krut (who has decided to spell her name in Latin script from now) and Phil It. “Баштани” (Melons) is a song that opens calmly, making it sound almost as if she begging her partner to stay here. As the song progresses, and especially towards the end where we get some electronic production work, the track starts feeling almost triumphant, luxuriating in yet also overshadowing the tenderness the track started with. Really, really pretty.
Eefje de Visser – “God Los”
Eefje de Visser is continuing her steady march to her album release date. In typical fashion, the song is dreamy, poetic, but also catchy. And great news for people who speak no or little Dutch: the video contains the full lyrics in Dutch and English as subtitles! I do feel I should give a photosensitivity warning ahead of you watching this video though, as it is a fever dream of visual effects reminiscent of visualizations from the WinAmp glory days. Or perhaps just an acid trip.
FEUERSCHWANZ – “KNIGHTCLUB” (LP)
The Feuerschwanz album has arrived! “KNIGHTCLUB” obviously includes the (longer version of the) title track, their collab with Lord of the Lost (yes the same that is on the LotL album), new tracks, and… a “Gangnam Style” cover? Said cover turns out both better and worse than you expect, but it definitely is quite the experience and another showcase for this band’s particular style of comedy.
