Now That’s What I Call… The Extended Eurovision Universe
As Eurovision fans (and some who aren’t) know, Eurovision neither starts nor ends with the main contest. From National Final season introducing the world to new and exciting artists, to former Junior Eurovision artists, to the big- and small-name songwriters and producers that work behind the scenes, people from all over the music industry make Eurovision the amazing thing that it is. Here is some of the best new music by Eurovision-adjacent acts.
Le Manou – “Feu Vert”
Is “Feu Vert” (Green Light) somewhat just reheating Charli XCX’s nachos? Perhaps. But Le Manou does it great and builds on the talent and promise she showed with her Belgian NF entry. Willem Vanderstichele (“Because Of You”, “Strobe Lights”) helped produce the track.
AMP (Antsud Metal Project) – “Sulam” (LP)
The Antsud Metal Project, also shortened to AMP, have been round-up regulars over the last year. Now, they present their 13-track album “Sulam”. By now, you’ll know whether you like them or not (you should) and whether this album will be worth your time (in my opinion, it is).
Bel Tempo – “Sandy Lane”
I really liked Bel Tempo’s Supernova entry this year, but I didn’t expect him to have something like this in them. This couldn’t be more for me if it tried, this is indie rock perfection. Song of the month!
NeonoeN – “Huk na zvuk”
Although Eurofan’s favourite purveyors of clickbait didn’t make it to Eurovision in the end, they still are releasing some very fun music. “Huk na zvuk” is a swaggering rock track that mixes Britrock influences with a more Balkan approach to create a proper chant-along anthem.
Nena – “Um Brinde ao Agora” (LP)
Looking for largely upbeat singer-songwriter tracks ranging between indie pop and poprock? Portugal’s Nena has got you covered with her new LP “Um Brinde ao Agora” (A Toast to Now). Just a lot of fun, and with enough musical variety that you’re likely to find at the very least one track you’ll love. For me it is “os croquetes acabam”, which both feels fresh and nostalgic two years after its release.
Caamaño&Ameixeiras, Tanxugueiras – “Ghatiña mansa”, Las Migas – “Grito” (Cantes abandolaos y Malagueña de la Trini)
Our beloved Tanxugueiras are back with two, or kinda three, songs this month, all representing a bit of a return to their pre-“Terra” roots. “Ghatiña mansa” (Tame cat) is a team up with Galician duo Caamaño&Ameixeiras, who bring their accordion, violin, and voice to provide a gorgeous different soundscape for the Galician trio to play with.
“Grito” sees Tanxu feature on a song by musical new flamenco quartet Las Migas. And yes, that means this is just a song in the style of new flamenco with the occasional singing and vocalizations of our favourite Galician trio. So I like it, but I completely get it if it isn’t your kind of thing. They also released, only on YouTube, the beautiful “O Meu Amor” (O My Love).
Clara Klingenström – “Samma gamla visa”
“Samma gamla visa” (Same old song) is the latest by Clara Klingenström. The song is a duet with fellow Mello-alum Björn Holmgren and is a upbeat, cute indie track about breaking free of all the things that no longer deserve your time and attention. A partial inspiration for the song is having to sing “Behöver inte dig idag” again and again and again, something she describes as being both fun and making her feel stuck. They also released an acoustic version of the track.
Agnes – “BALENCIAGA COVERED EYES”
She was on a bit of a hiatus, but Swedish star Agnes is back in the recording booth. “BALENCIAGA COVERED EYES” is the first part of a new era and new album for the singer. The track feels strongly inspired by 90’s house music, while also injecting other and more current musical ideas into the sound to keep it feeling very current. It’s just a very, very, very listenable song from an upcoming album we don’t know too much about, but I will likely keep you posted on any songs released in that run-up.
Eefje de Visser – “Onomkeerbaar”
In the slightly more loosely connected category, we start with someone who opened a Eurovision show. 2021’s second semi-final was opened by the amazing singer-songwriter Eefje de Visser. “Onomkeerbaar” (Irreversible) is the first single of her upcoming album “Heimwee II” (Homesick II), a follow-up to her 2024 release… “Heimwee”. The song features Eefje’s trademark vocals which can switch between ethereal and strong at the tip of the hat. While a bit faster and more electronic than most of her work, the songwriting is still undeniably her as well. A true highlight this month.
Bycecilia – “Gaarvanih (You Left)”
We close things off this month with Sámi Grand Prix 2024 winner Bycecilia. “Gaarvanih (You Left)” is a very pretty indie singer-songwriter track with some baffling, yet somehow fitting, EDM-inspired instrumentation that make you fear a beatdrop might come in and change things up, but thankfully Bycecilia’s voice remains the main focus of the track.
