🇩🇪 Germany to hold a national selection to select its 2026 Eurovision representative ?

For the first time in 30 years, SWR will be handed the responsibility for the selection, organization and all other responsibilities regarding their participation in Eurovision 2026.

A possible national selection

Whilst no official statement has been made, sources close to ESCKompakt claim that a national final is in the works to choose the successor of Abor & Tynna. There has been an indirect confirmation made by SWR as they have taken over the official online german eurovision accounts. Moreover, eurovision.de gave this response to a reader of ESCKompakt regarding their quiery :

“(…) We at SWR are in the middle of developing the concept. But it won’t be long before you hear all the latest news about the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest and the German preliminary round. (…)”

Information in the coming weeks

It is still unclear whether Stefan Raab, the leading force of Germany’s 2025 national selection will remain involved in next year’s selection process. Moreover, details surrounding the application phase, the format, presenters and where the selection will take place remain unclear. However, information regarding the latter is due to revealed in the coming weeks.

Germany’s Eurovision History

Germany has been part of Eurovision since the beginning, debuting in 1956. Their debut entries were Walter Andreas Schwarz’s “Im Wartesaal zum großen Glück” and Freddy Quinn’s “So geht das jede Nacht”. Germany has appeared at every Eurovision except for 1996, which means they have been at more Contests than any other country. They have a long history of success in Eurovision, finishing in the top 3 an impressive 13 times. Germany has won the contest twice: Nicole won in 1982 with her song “Ein bißchen Frieden”, taking home 161 points. Their second win came in 2010, when Lena scored 246 points with her song “Satellite”.

Germany’s most recent Eurovision entry was Abor & Tynna with “Baller”. As Germany is part of the Big 5, they automatically qualified for the Grand Final. In the Final, the song received 151 points and finished in 15th place.
