In the interview, Rory, Jacaréu and Ana Margarida talk about their shock at being chosen through RTP’s open submission process. They also chat about how Ana Margarida and Jacaréu are planning more collaborations, and how they are planning to bust out the latex for their performance on the Festival da Canção stage. They also reveal the reasoning behind their decision to boycott Eurovision due to Israel’s participation.
Who are Jacaréu and Ana Margarida?
Jacaréu is an indie-rap artist, based in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. A keen poet, he first honed his craft at various events across the city before combining it with a more musical style – taking on inspiration from music from the 1980s and 1990s. He is due to release his debut album in 2026, of which Ana Margarida is featured on two songs, including “O-pi-ni-ão”.
Ana Margarida is a fado singer, also based within Lisbon, who already showed a penchant for music from a young age. She began her singing career at the age of 10, and just two years later she represented Portugal at the Bravo Bravissimo singing competition in Italy. Since then, she has become a fadista, singing in bars across Lisbon.
Their song for Fesitval da Canção 2026, “O-pi-ni-ão”, was written by Jacaréu himself.
Portugal’s Eurovision journey
Portugal debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest with António Calvário’s “Oração” in 1964. Since then, Portugal has participated in the competition 55 times – appearing the final 46 times. Their only win in the competition came in 2017 with Salvador Sobral, performing his heart-wrenching song “Amar Pelos Dois”.
Portugal’s most recent participation was with NAPA with the song “Deslocado”. The band managed to qualify for the Grand Final and once there, they finished in 21st place. They received a total of 50 points, of which 37 points came from the jury and 13 points came the televote.
