🇦🇹 Vienna to enforce tight security for Eurovision 2026

Organisers of the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 have pledged strict security measures for the event in Vienna this May, citing the ongoing tensions surrounding the contest’s line-up and the broader global context.

Enhanced Measures at the Stadthalle

With the Contest scheduled to take place at Wiener Stadthalle from 12–16 May, Austrian authorities and the host broadcaster ORF announced a comprehensive security plan developed in cooperation with the Vienna Police, the Interior Ministry and city officials. First of all, the deployment of around 500 security personnel daily inside the Stadthalle, Airport-style screening with metal detectors and X-ray checks for all staff, delegations and visitors. Also, a strict no-bag policy, even small bags and backpacks, will not be permitted and lastly, the use of sniffer dogs, surveillance systems and cybersecurity safeguards to protect infrastructure.

Organisers emphasise that security is the top priority to ensure a safe and smooth event amid heightened attention and sensitivities around the Contest.

All About Eurovision 2026

The journey to the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest kicked off immediately following JJ’s win in Basel, when Austria’s ORF accepted the rights to host the 70th edition of the contest. The bidding process started in June, with interested cities having until July 4 to submit their bid book. Innsbruck and Vienna were shortlisted, with the latter winning the right to host next year’s contest. 35 countries will take part in the competition, the lowest number of competing entries since 2004.

As for the organisation of the competition, the ‘core team‘ was revealed in June 2025, with further details about next year’s competition to be revealed in due course. The shows will take place on May 12th, 14th and 16th.
