What else happened tonight?
The second night of Sanremo 2023 was presented by Amadeus and Gianni Morandi, with journalist and presenter Francesca Fagnani as the guest host. Francesca’s monologue talked about the importance of education, and the divide between communities across Italy in opportunities for children and young people. Pegah and Drusilla also appeared as guests, passionately talking about the Iranian protests on women’s’ rights.
Guest performances were given by Al Bano, Massimo Ranieri and the Black Eyed Peas. Fedez performed from the Sanremo cruise ship floating stage, and Francesco Renga & Nek took to the Colombo Square stage just outside of the Ariston. Actor Francesco Arca also appeared, promoting his new show “Resta con me” alongside ten year-old co-star Mario di Leva. Figure skater Francesca Lollobrigida took part in the show, which also included the introduction of two pairs of potential mascots for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan!

Italy’s Eurovision Journey
Italy has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest since the very beginning and has always been considered a powerhouse in the contest. Italy has won the contest on three occasions: in 1964, 1990 and 2021. After 1997, Italy withdrew for a while, returning again in 2011 with Raphael Gualazzi, who sang ‘Madness Of Love.’ Raphael placed second in the 2011 Eurovison Song Contest, scoring 189 points.
Italy’s most recent entry in 2022 was ‘Brividi’ by Mahmood and Blanco, performed on home soil after rock band Måneskin won the previous contest in 2021. At the close of voting, Italy scoring 268 points in the Eurovision 2022 Grand Final, placing sixth.
