What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from the Semi-Final of Benidorm Fest 2024?
Kittens (“Brillos Platino”): I am not ashamed to say this really didn’t hit at first, but this catchy bop has gently wormed its way into my brain – this feels like a spiritual successor to last years ‘Nochentera’. I hope it’ll be a fantastic end to the semi-final – Almacor seems to be a very fun performer on stage, and I hope the chill dancey vibes really come through!
Jazzi (“BESO EN LA MAÑANA”): This is a fun little catchy song. This is a song that I can imagine myself having a little bop to. Sure this may be a little generic but sometimes that can be a good thing, it’s something sounds familiar. The melody is catchy and enjoyable and this is just very pleasant to listen to.
Rory (“No se me olvida”): Yoly Saa is bringing one of the few songs in this year’s competition that offers a blend of a tradition and modernity. Couple this with her Galician rhythms and it shows that Spain can once again mix electronica with pop and traditional roots perfectly. Lyrically, the song can easily translate to a wider audience too and with the potential for bombastic staging, I can only imagine what Yoly Saa has lined up for us!
Spain’s Eurovision Journey
Spain debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 with Conchita Bautista’s “Estando Contigo”. The country earned its first win in 1968 with Massiel’s “La La La”, and won again in 1969 with Salome’s “Vivo Cantando” in an infamous four-way tie. Although they have yet to win again, Spain earned several 2nd place finishes, most famously with Mocedades’ “Eres tu” in 1973 and Anabel Conde’s “Vuelve conmigo” in 1996.
In 2023, Spain selected Blanca Paloma to carry on the success of Chanel in 2022. As part of the Big 5, Blanca Paloma did not need to qualify to the Grand Final from the semi-finals. At the close of voting, her song “EAEA” finished 17th, with a total of 100 points. Of these, 95 points came from the jury, whilst 5 came from the televote.
