As we now have the songs competing for this year’s competition in Malmö, the team at That Eurovision Site will be reacting to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2024. The next entry we will be reacting to is Serbia, who will be competing in this year’s competition with “Sand” by Saba.

Our thoughts on “Sand”

In this series, we will be providing our opinions in two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst three other members will be giving their written opinion on the entry. Tim will be on the main seat and will be giving his reaction to “Sand”

What did the other members of the team think of “Sand”?

Jazzi: This is a song that is really growing on me since it was selected. I hadn’t really paid much attention to Denmark’s selection all that much, although this one did stick out to me as the best attempt this year. However as I’ve listened to it more it’s really catchy and the chorus is actually quite memorable. My only concerns are it has taken me a few listens to properly gel with it, which is obviously a concern when most of Europe are hearing these songs for the first time.

Euan: In a year of solid female vocalists, Denmark uncharacteristically stands out. While the song isn’t remarkable on the first, or even the first few, listens; it is something that stays with you. The chorus in particular is something I’ve had stuck in my head continuously at times, despite not a lot of listens in the grand scheme of things. I do have concerns that its lack of first time impact may have serious implications when it comes to the voting.

Denmark’s Eurovision Journey

Denmark first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1957 and notched up their first win in 1963 with Grethe and Jørgan Ingmann’s “Dansevise”. Denmark later earned two third-place finishes in 1988 and 1989 but was then relegated three times in 1994, 1996, and 1998. They finally achieved their second victory in 2000 with the Olsen Brothers’ “Fly on the Wings of Love”, and have missed the Grand Final seven times since the introduction of the semi-finals. A six-year qualification streak from 2008 culminated in its third win in 2013 with Emmelie de Forrest’s “Only Teardrops”.

Denmark’s most recent participation saw them being represented by Reiley with the song “Breaking My Heart”. After opening the second semi-final in Liverpool, Reiley finished in 14th place receiving just 6 points from the televote.
