Together, Georgia and Dons talk about Dons’ previous attempts at representing Latvia at Eurovision. They also discuss the Latvian version of his song “Hollow” and ask him whether he will feature some in his performance in Malmö. The pair also discuss Dons’ love of London and the diversity that comes with it.

Who is Dons?

Dons is the stage name of Artūrs Šingirejs, a 39-year-old singer-songwriter from Brocēni in south-west Latvia. He was introduced to music from a very young age, with Freddie Mercury being an inspiration for his music. He initially left music after finishing school, studying culinary arts at university before returning to music full-time. He later shot to fame when he appeared on the Latvian reality show Talantu Fabrika. His song for Eurovision, “Hollow”, was written by Dons himself, alongside Kate Northrop and Liam Geddes.

Latvia’s Eurovision journey

Latvia made their Eurovision debut in 2000, finishing 3rd with “My Star” by Brainstorm. They have performed at every contest since and managed to win in 2002. Marie N sang “I Wanna,” scoring 176 points and bringing Eurovision to Riga in the process. Latvia also managed to finish in the top 10 two more times, in 2005 and 2015.

Latvia’s most recent entry on the Eurovision stage was Sudden Lights, who performed “Aijā”. The song failed to qualify from the semi-final, finishing 11th with 34 points from the televote.
