Today the rehearsals for Eurovision 2024 continue in Malmö. Countries rehearsing on Day 4 include Latvia, San Marino, Georgia, Belgium, Estonia, Norway and The Netherlands. The sixth to rehearse today is Norway’s Gåte.
Gåte’s first rehearsal
The next to take to the Eurovision 2024 stage at Malmö Arena in Malmö was Norway’s Gåte. Gåte will be competing in this year’s competition with their entry “Ulveham” following on from winning national selection Melodi Grand Prix.
Following Gåte first rehearsal a clip of what went on was posted on the official TikTok account of the Eurovision Song Contest. The clip showed them before and after they took to the Eurovision stage for the first time, as well as giving us some insight into how well their first rehearsal went.
Once the official Eurovision TikTok has been uploaded, you can watch it here.
What did we learn about Gåte’s staging?

Since it was absolutely amazing, Gåte have obviously gone for staging similar to what we saw from them in Melodi Grand Prix, they’ve got their rotating rock with shrubbery on it, with the band members spread around it, the fog remains from MGP, swamping the bottom of the stage and creating a moody environment where this song thrives. As for fashion, Gunnhild is wearing all dark green, with a top that has leaves draped across one of the shoulders, with her bandmates all in dark tones If you’ve been as lucky as I have to have seen Gåte perform live you’ll know where the energy levels are with this lot, off the scales. Magnus’ guitar throwing is sure to draw in the casual viewer.
What we thought of Gåte’s first rehearsal
After Norway’s first rehearsal, Daniel gave his initial thoughts on the snippet that we saw.
As soon as our reaction to the first rehearsal is up, you can watch it here.
Who are Gåte?
Gåte has been active as a band since 1999. They released their first EP, simply titled Gåte EP, in 2000, which gained significant popularity. Their music typically consists of rearranged versions of traditional Norwegian folk tunes with added metal and electronica. While the members have changed over the years, their current formation consists of Gunnhilk Sundli (vocals), Magnus Børmark (guitar), Jon Even Schärer (drummer), Mats Paulsen (bass) and John Stenersen (nyckelharpa).
The group had a four year hiatus between 2005 and 2009, then again between 2010 and 2017. Their first album, “Jygri”, reached number 1 in the Norwegian charts when it was released in 2002. Since their return, they have released 2 albums, “Svevn” (Sleep), which reached #11 on the Norwegian charts at its peak, and “Nord” (North).
At Eurovision, Gåte will perform “Ulveham”, a modern interpretation of the Norwegian medieval ballad “Møya i ulveham” (The Maid in Wolf Pelt). The song was written by Gunnhild Sundli, Magnus Børmark, Jon Even Schärer, Martin Jensen Lillebuen, Ronny Graff Janssen and Sveinung Ekloo Sundli. It was produced by Sveinung Sundli, Magnus Børmark, Tobias Østerdal and Marit Jensen Lillebuen.
Norway’s Eurovision Journey
The Scandinavian nation made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1960, with Nora Brockstedt and the song “Voi Voi”, which placed 4th. Since their debut, they have participated 61 times, and made the Grand Final 58 of these. In addition, Norway has won the competition three times – in 1985, 1995, and 2009.
Norway’s latest Eurovision participation saw them being represented by Alessandra with the song “Queen of Kings”. After qualifying for the final, Norway placed 5th in the Grand Final, receiving 268 points, 52 of which from the jury and 216 from televoters.
