Following Nemo’s win at 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, the preparations for Eurovision 2025 are well underway. Cities across Switzerland have confirmed their intent to bid, with the country’s unofficial capital Bern having done so.
Eurovision 2025 funding
A few days on from formal confirmation that Bern has bid to host the 2025 contest, it has been revealed by Swiss news outlet 20 Minuten that the city hopes that the federal government will make significant contributions to alleviate the costs associated with hosting. Bern has estimated that it will cost in excess of 40 million Francs to host the contest, with 27 million Francs of that being purely security related.
The Bernese bid is contingent on the city, cantonal, and federal government coming to a compromise on funding. The city believes that the cantonal government should bare the burden of funding the contest; with the cantonal government stating that they will only do so if the federal government pays at least 60% of the security costs. At the time of writing there had been no indication of what the federal government intentions with funding were, however politicians at the federal level had already raised concerns about the potential cost.
Bern and Biel/Bienne
Bern is the Swiss de facto capital, and is Switzerland’s fifth most populous city. The city plan on hosting the contest at the newly opened BernExpo.
Biel/Bienne is a bilingual German/French city around 35 minutes north of Bern, and lies on a lake of the same name. It is the home town of Eurovision 2024 winner Nemo.
