The Dutch broadcaster are still undecided on their participation following the disqualification of Joost Klein from Eurovision 2024 and have been given an extended deadline to decide their intent.

Participation talks ongoing

AVROTROS has been given an extended deadline of November 1st to confirm their Eurovision 2025 participation following talks with the EBU. Talks regarding participation have been ongoing for several weeks, with the disqualification of Joost Klein and the backstage atmosphere and treatment of artists behind the scenes being key obstacles towards Dutch participation.

In a statement, the broadcaster has said:

“In order to give this constructive dialogue a chance of success, AVROTROS has requested a postponement for the decision on participation. The EBU has granted this postponement until 1 November, for which we are grateful.”

EBU Response

The EBU have also released a statement regarding the extended deadline, saying:

“The EBU is pleased with the constructive dialogue with AVROTROS about their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest next year. We confirm we have granted them an extension to the application deadline until 1 November. We very much hope to see AVROTROS compete in Basel next May and expect to publish the full list of participating broadcasters for the 69th Eurovision Song Contest by the end of this year.”

The Netherlands’ Eurovision journey

The Netherlands are one of the founding countries of the ESC, having performed the very first song ever on the Eurovision stage back in 1956. While the result of “De Vogels van Holland” is unknown, the Netherlands have garnered 5 wins, with their most recent in 2019. However the Netherlands are also known to have had the longest ever non qualification streak in the semi-final era – they missed out on the final a whopping 8 times between 2005 and 2012.

Joost Klein represented the Netherlands in 2024 with the song “Europapa”. While he was ultimately disqualified, he would have made it to the final, placing second in his semi-final with 182 points.
