What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from Montesong 2024?
Angus (Čuješ li): Verica brings vocals and emotions to this cinematic-sounding ballad that slowly builds towards a grand, sweeping conclusion. Thanks to her, this song that has the potential of being overly schmaltzy manages to stick the landing and instead takes the listener on a personal yet grand feeling romantic story. A very good “lighters in the air” kind of song that works both with and without knowing the lyrics.
Lewis (To ljubav je): I don’t know if it’s just because it’s the season that I’m thinking this way, but “To ljubav je” just feels very christmassy to me. You could put this in next year’s John Lewis advert and it’ll fit like a glove! This song just feels very cozy to me. I’m a sucker for orchestral instrumentation, so this song speaks to my heart. It’s a song that sounds so haunting yet warm at the same time. I love Ðurđa’s vocals and I look forward to seeing this song staged.
Rory (Dva srca): “Dva srca” offers the most competent package that brings immediacy, intensity and power all in 3 minutes, all while having moments of quiet to take you through the journey of the lyrics. Of course it’s a bit rough and ready, and over time it will very likely it will be a revamp, but there’s the most potential for something that can stand out here.
Montenegro’s Eurovision Journey
Before Montenegro announced its return to the Eurovision Song Contest for 2025, they had a scattered appearance at the competition.
There has been a Montenegrin presence at the Eurovision Song Contest as far back as 1983, when the nation was a part of Yugoslavia. Montenegrin entries went on to represent Yugoslavia in 1983 and 1984, placing 4th and 18th respectively. Similarly, the nation also sent an entry as part of Serbia and Montenegro in 2005, placing 7th with No Name’s “Zauvijek moja”.
As an independent nation, Montenegro debuted in 2007 with Steven Faddy’s “Ajde, kroci”. This began a string of non-qualifications, until their first appearance in a Grand Final in 2014. Montenegro’s best result came in 2015 with Knez’s “Adio”, scoring 44 points and placing 13th. Their most recent appearance in the Contest was in 2022, when Vladana finished in 17th place in the semi-final with 33 points with her song “Breathe”.
