About “Miss Me, Santa?”

“Miss Me, Santa?” was released on November 28th, 2024, making this one of the newest additions to your Eurovision holiday playlist. Bodine Monet wrote the song alongside Kaya van den Bosch (The voice of Holland), Loek van der Grinten (Burning Daylight, LEEZ, Bente), and Melle Boddaert (Melle, philine). A mix of pop and soft country, the song is almost flirty towards Santa Claus, describing Bodine’s excitement to spend time with a loved one she’s missed and to celebrate the holiday season. It’s also not her first foray into holiday music, as she, as a teenager, released “The Magic of Christmas Time” eight years ago; that song is, in fact, her earliest single available on streaming services, so one could say this new release is taking her back to basics.

What do we think?

It’s a good listen. While the structure of the song is very Taylor Swift, I much prefer Bodine’s voice–it’s deeper and more developed, more mature. The prechorus is fun because it subverts my expectations slightly, with a chromatic bassline that I personally don’t expect from a Christmas song. It feels original, which is lovely, speaking as someone who hears the same twelve Christmas songs on the radio every year. That said, paying close attention to the lyrics is a bit funny, because Bodine is… shall we say… very familiar with the old man–and, if you know your religious history, technically literally a saint , who delivers presents every year. So if I concentrate too hard on what she’s actually saying, it’s like, you want to get with Santa Claus? Like, the guy who lives at the North Pole? You want him to spoil you this year? It’s all very Eartha Kitt but without the kitschy comedy of “Santa Baby”. Maybe Santa is just a stand-in for a real boyfriend.
