Behind the 19th door on the TES Advent Calendar is…
About “Mūsų žiema”
Mūsų Žiema (Our Winter) was a 2023 release by the band SKYLĖ, of which Aistė is the main vocalist, and was, despite other seasons featuring plentifully in the band’s work, their music being at least partly folk derived after all, the group’s first winter themed song in their over 30 year existence. Lyrically, the song asks what one’s ideal winter would look like, and for SKYLĖ, the thing they really miss is the warmth and the colours that faded away as the year went on, saying “We want to bring the sun and colours to winter, which everyone is missing so much.” The music and lyrics of the song were written by Aistė herself.
What do we think?
Strazdas is one of my absolute favourite Eurovision songs, and I can really see shades of it in this absolutely lovely track. Aistė’s powerful voice and vocalising was what made me fall in love with her song in seconds, and she remains absolutely fantastic, and the folky sounds are a huge bit of me, and think I might be singing “Mūsų žiemaaaaaaa” every night from here on out up until Santa comes. I really ought to listen to more of SKYLĖ’s music – perhaps that can be a new year’s resolution for me 2025.
Aistė’s Eurovision Journey
Lithuania were represented at Eurovision 1999 by a young Aistė Smilgevičiūtėm. She sang the folk number “Strazdas”, meaning “song thrush” – and was the first time a Eurovision song had been performed in the Samogitian dialect of Lithuanian. Performing in the opening spot in Jerusalem, she finished in 20th place, amassing 12 points. Tasteful Eurofans still place the song in their ESC250 to this day however (mild spoilers for my ESC250 article, which is dropping on Sunday!)
