Jonas Lovv, who represented Norway at Eurovision 2026

Norway’s national broadcaster NRK has today confirmed their intention to participate in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest in Bulgaria. This would mark the 65th participation in Eurovision for Norway.

Melodi Grand Prix returns

Norwegian broadcaster NRK has announced the return of the country’s Melodi Grand Prix (MGP) national selection process for the 2027 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. MGP will return for its 65th edition in early 2027 according to a press release. Tarjei Strøm will once again act as music director for the selection show, with registration for the competition now open.

Tarjei Strøm says:

We are looking for artists and songs with a unique character, a clear identity and impact. A song that stands out from the very first listen, and that both the Norwegian audience and the rest of Europe will just want to hear over and over again.

We want artists who have something to tell, who dare to be themselves and who are ready to throw themselves wholeheartedly into an adventure that can take them from the rehearsal room to the biggest stage in Europe.

Registration now open

Registration for MGP 2027 can be found here, and the submission window closes at midnight, August 31st 2026. The rules for entry remain mostly unchanged from previous editions of the competition. Songs must be original compositions, must be no longer than 3 minutes and submissions must have not been performed or released before September 1st 2026. The song must also have at least 1 Norwegian songwriter attatched. Each producer or songwriter may present a maximum of 3 songs to the selection.

The age of artist allowed to apply to the contest has changed since last year’s edition of MGP, however. For this year’s contest, the artist must have turned 18 by May 1st 2027, raised from the previous age of 16 in the 2026 edition.

NRK have invited all songwriters, artists and musicians to submit contributions to the selection, regardless of genre. Planning for the next edition of MGP is already well underway according to NRK. Mads Tørklep, the project manager behind the national selection show has promised fans have a lot to look forward to.

Mads Tørklep says:

MGP continues to develop, and we are working on several exciting new features that we look forward to sharing after the summer. The ambition is to create the strongest and most spectacular edition of Melodi Grand Prix yet.

Norway’s Eurovision journey

The Scandinavian nation made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1960, with Nora Brockstedt and the song “Voi Voi”, which placed 4th. Since their debut, they have participated 62 times, and made the Grand Final 59 of these. In addition, Norway has won the competition three times – in 1985, 1995, and 2009.

Melodi Grand Prix is the Norwegian method of selection for Eurovision. This national final selection method is over 60 years old. The only year where Melodi Grand Prix has not taken place was 2002, when Norway were relegated from the Eurovision Song Contest. Melodi Grand Prix had undertaken a few different formats. The changes in format have mainly taken place in the last few years, since 2020.

In 2026, Jonas Lovv won the 64th edition of MGP with “Ya Ya Ya”, seeing the singer represent them at the contest in Vienna. After qualifying for the final, Norway placed 14th in the Grand Final, receiving 134 points, 115 of which from the jury and 19 from televoters.
