Ethan - Podcast Editor

Before September 1st hits, and we get sucked into a new Eurovision season, we wanted to take the opportunity to give our readers a chance to get to know our team a bit better.

Thereโ€™s no other way to do this other than to do a series where we introduce ourselves. In this part, it is the turn of the Podcast Editor, Ethan.

How did I get into Eurovision?

My first memory of the contest is watching Loreen win in 2012 with Euphoria. I wouldโ€™ve been 7 years old at the time and I remember being amazed by her performance and from then on I made sure to watch the contest every year.

Up until 2017/2018 I only ever watched the grand finals, but as my love for the contest grew I started watching the semi finals every year.

At what point did I consider myself a Eurofan?

This is a tough one to answer as I canโ€™t really pick a defining moment for this. If I had to choose, it would probably be when I first watched a national final which was in 2018.

How has my life changed?

Since becoming a Eurofan I wouldnโ€™t say my life has changed in any major way. Despite saying this Iโ€™ve gained a massive appreciation for music from all over the world which I would like to believe stems from watching Eurovision.

What are my favourite Eurovision songs & countries?

Considering how wide ranged my taste in music is itโ€™s really difficult to narrow this down to a handful of songs:

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช Loreen – “Euphoria” (Sweden, 2012)
๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Katrina & The Waves – “Love Shine A Light” (UK, 1997)
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช Bambie Thug – “Doomsday Blue” (Ireland, 2024)
๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Frances Ruffelle – “Lonely Symphony” (UK, 1994)
๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท Sertab Erener – “Every Way That I Can” (Turkey, 2003)

Favourite national final songs?

In all honesty, Iโ€™ve never really watched national finals. In all my years watching Eurovision the only national finals Iโ€™ve seen are the UKโ€™s selections from 2018 and 2019. This is something Iโ€™m really wanting to change in the near future as there is so much music out there to be discovered.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Holly Tandy – “Bigger Than Us” (Eurovision: You Decide, 2019)
๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Raya – “Crazy” (Eurovision: You Decide, 2018)

What am I looking forward to next ESC season?

Iโ€™m really looking forward to seeing the advancements in how Eurovision is presented visually. Having a degree in Film & TV production, Iโ€™m excited to see how new tools are going to be used on screen. One of my favourite examples of this was the #Eurodab performance in Basel which I thought was very well put together and visually stunning.
