🇪🇺 EBU confirms: No broadcaster has requested Israel’s exclusion from Eurovision 2026

Despite extensive debate and strong public stances from several countries, EBU has confirmed that no member broadcaster has formally demanded the exclusion of Israel from the Eurovision 2026 in Vienna.

No formal exclusion requests issued

A report from RTL relayed this development, underscoring that while tensions remain, especially following calls from certain artists, officials, and broadcasters, no formal exclusion request has been submitted to the EBU. Slovenia had suggested it may withdraw if Israel participates, while political and public calls had been made in countries like Spain and Belgium. While public protests, letters, and activist appeals have put Israel’s participation under a spotlight, the latest winner JJ, Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez, and over 70 past Eurovision artists have even called for its removal. None of these challenges has translated into formal procedural action.

The EBU assures that all current members remain eligible unless an official objection is lodged. The dialogue continues with national broadcasters to understand their positions while stressing that Eurovision is a non-political cultural event.

Israel’s Eurovision Journey

Israel has a long and wealthy history in the Eurovision Song Contest, making their debut in 1973 with Ilanit and “Ey Sham”. Their first entry scored 97 points, placing 4th. Israel has since gone on to win the Contest on four separate occasions – in 1978, 1979, 1998 and 2018.

Yuval Raphael represented Israel in Basel during the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 with the song “New Day Will Rise”. Performing at the second semi-final, Israel qualified for the final in 1st place. In the final itself, Yuval finished in 2nd place with a total of 357 points – 60 points from the jury and 297 from the televote.
