Now That’s What I Call… The Extended Eurovision Universe
As Eurovision fans (and some who aren’t) know, Eurovision neither starts nor ends with the main contest. From National Final season introducing the world to new and exciting artists, to former Junior Eurovision artists, to the big- and small-name songwriters and producers that work behind the scenes, people from all over the music industry make Eurovision the amazing thing that it is. Here is some of the best new music by Eurovision-adjacent acts.
Nombeko Auguste – “Bus Kaip Nori”
NF contestant, host, and interval act Nombeko Auguste makes what I think is her round-up debut with the lush electropop of “Bus Kaip Nori” (It Will Be As You Wish). Even for those who, like me, don’t understand Lithuanian, the maelstrom of disappointment, anger, and sadness is palpable thanks to Nombeko’s great delivery and the production courtesy of Linas Strockis (“Luktelk”) and Karolis Labanauskas (“Luktelk”, Jovani, Galantis).
INGER – “kollane maja”
Back in the day we all lived in yellow submarines, and now INGER is waiting in a yellow house. This is a lovely, gentle love jam that adds a slight touch of R&B to the singer-songwriters usual indie sound.
Meelik – “(Töopealkiri)” (LP)
It’s been a big month for us Meelik-heads. First it was announced that NOËP, a solo project of one of the band members of Meelik, will be in Eesti Laul. And then on the last day of the month the band released their album “(Töopealkiri)” (Title of work)! Previously released entries including Eesti Laul entry “Tuju” are joined by new tracks, all infused with the delightfully loose, fun, garagey sound we love the band for. Highly recommend!
Chiquita Movida – “Gastos de gestión” (EP)
Last we spoke of Rayden, he was retiring from music to become an author. Now, seemingly out of nowhere, he is back with more music. “Gastos de gestión” (Management expenses) is the debut EP of Rayden’s new musical project Chiquita Movida. The other members of the group are Mediyama, Skiz Siete, Jhonny, and Jona. The tracks all are infectious indie pop rock tracks, from the cheerful “Ojos superocho” to the more electric guitar and rap dominated “La nueva ilusión de”. Really fun, and we will keep an eye on them to see how this project develops from here.
Mathilde SPZ – “Calling You”
Meanwhile in the EDM section, you might hear Mathilde SPZ “Calling You”. Asis so often the case with Mathilde, she (co-)produced the song herself. Joining her in the production booth for “Calling You” was Ola Frøyen (Kyle Alessandro, Subwoolfer, Sondrey).
OTOY – “Все моє життя”
This month in our traditional Ukraine slot in the NF section we find OTOY. “Все моє життя” (My whole life) feels like another evolution in the artist’s sound, with the rock influences and heavier focus on singing over rapping perhaps being influenced by his recent involvement with the musical project МУР. Either way, this track truly has the right sound for a song about how difficult it can be to become, let alone remain, happy in life.
COSBY – “I’m Still Here” (EP)
Germany’s 2025 national final was a wild ride with a wild line-up. Among the many artists was the group COSBY, a pop-rock band from Munich. They now have released their latest EP to tell us that “I’m still here”, which conveniently also was their national final entry. The new single on this record is “Regret It”, which is all about not letting chances pass you by.
Eefje de Visser – “Vlijmscherp” (LP)
“Vlijmscherp” (Razor sharp) is the name of Eefje de Visser’s 6th studio album. I wrote about the pre-release singles “Onomkeerbaar“, “Normaal Toen“, and “God Los” very positively, and my opinion on the rest of the album is much the same. It’s a return to the singer-songwriters synth heavy, electronica and new wave inspired sound, which she has perfected into her own brew of musical excellence and now made a bit more catchy and danceable. Sharp, poetic lyrics and dives into the dynamics of relationships are, as always with Eefje, key to making this as interesting as it is.
