The Winners

Nemo – “Arthouse” (LP)

Good things come to those who wait. In this case, the good thing is Nemo’s debut album “Arthouse”! Previously released singles “Eurostar“, “Casanova“, “Unexplainable“, “God’s A Raver“, “Hocus Pocus“, and Eurovision winning “The Code” are joined by multiple new pieces of music on this 14 track effort. By and large the songs all are different takes on the opulent, bombastic, big studio glampop sound like we heard in the singles, perhaps at its best on “God’s A Raver”.

This album however is full of interesting cuts. If it weren’t for “The Code”, the more contemplative, dreampoppy “I Got High At The Party” would’ve been the gorgeous, gentle closer. Title track “Arthouse” opens on a piano and then takes a page from Mark Ronson for the production. “Ride My Baby”, the first proper track as intro “Front Door” is a short moodsetter, has musical elements that feel like they came from some of the most fun hits of the early 10s. Or how about the in your face “Frog Swamp”, which sees Nemo being at their most experimental yet, fusing alternative pop with R&B backing vocals and wild shifts in tone and sound. Album of the month, if it hadn’t been for Jeangu Macrooy’s excellent album also coming out. But definitely give this a spin, especially if you loved any of the previously released singles.

Astrid Canales, Salvador Sobral – “VACÍO”

Salvador Sobral can’t get enough of a good feature or collab. This month, he joined Astrid Canales for her new song “VACÍO”. The track is, as is so often the case with Salvador’s collabs, a gentle and gorgeously composed track. I do wish the song was longer and got bigger, because between the excellent vocals of both and just the overall feel of the track this deserved a bit more of a bombastic ending musically.

Worakls – “Falling (feat. Loreen)”

Speaking of feature-happy Eurovision winners: Loreen. This month she shows up on the track “Falling” by French DJ Worakls. His style, which takes influences from rock, electro, and classical creates a sound that my brain just wants to describe as “what if AWOLNATION did a movie soundtrack”. This honestly just makes me want to hear Loreen on a few more rock track.

Κωνσταντίνος Χριστοφόρου & Έλενα Παπαρίζου – “Λατρεύω / Latrevo”

“Λατρεύω” (Worship) is the name of the game for the new song by winner Helena Paparizou and three-time Cypriot representative Konstantinos Christoforou. The song is a love duet that in the chorus can’t decide if it wants to be a power ballad or not. Helena, it must be said, sounds great as always.

Gundersen Blannede Pikekor, Hanne Krogh, Hege Schøyen, Anne Grete Preus, Grethe Kausland – “Bryllupsfest – Klokkene Ringer For Deg”

Hanne Krogh of Bobbysocks and MGP 2025 fame is one of the people on this track from the 1989 Norwegian comedy Bryllupsfesten (The wedding party). So why does this soundtrack get (re)released now? Haven’t got a scooby myself either but it technically is a new release so in the round-up it goes.
