The Year That Was: The Best New “Eurovision” Music of 2024
With the year coming to an end, we at That Eurovision Site wanted to treat ourselves to writing about our favourite releases, and reminding you of some of the best new music of 2024. So enjoy the best releases of each month, plus some more things we absolutely loved!
Froukje – “Noodzakelijk Verdriet” (LP)
Daniel here to take you all the way back to January with this admittedly loose connection to the contest. Froukje may be best known to Eurovision fans for her collaborations with S10, the latest of which almost featured here, but she actually has a more formal relationship to the contest – serving on the Dutch jury at Eurovision 2023. Anyway, she started the year off with a bang with her debut album Noodzakelijk Verdriet (Necessary Sadness). The synth-heavy album features 15 tracks, including everything from the absolute bangers like Kwijt and Drijfzand to scaled back slower numbers like Leeg Restaurant and Houden Van Mij. Every track is brilliant and there’s something for everyone – easily my favourite LP released this year.
Benjamin Ingrosso – Pink Velvet Theatre (LP)
Kittens here with my obvious choice of the year, Benjamin Ingrosso’s Pink Velvet Theatre album. An album over two years in the making, Benjamin finally released Pink Velvet Theatre in October and it went straight to number 1 in Sweden. The album takes you through a heady dreamscape of love, loss, and time travel in a sweeping cinematic manner. Using his craft for storytelling alongside his passion for performance, hits like Kite, Look Who’s Laughing Now and new tracks like Back To You become part of a wider story, with interludes adding to the storytelling. Sit back, relax and lose yourself in the magic of Pink Velvet Theatre.
What releases were the best of each month?
Now, songs and albums can grow on you in different ways so this is far from a definitive list of the best or my favourite Eurovision-adjacent releases of this year.
