The Winners
LORDI – “Syntax Terror”
Ahead of their upcoming album “Limited Deadition”, which is coming out in March 2025, Finland’s Lordi shares some new music. “Syntax Terror” features exactly the kind of sound we expect and want from the 2006 winners, with a few moments of electronic instrumentation in honour of the song title. Mr. Lordi wrote and composed the song, while the lyrics were co-written by Traci Lipp (Lordi, Robin Packalen, Hanna Pakarinen).
Ligados Às Máquinas – “Tarda, sim… tarda, não!” (feat. Joana Gama, Mano A Mano, Salvador Sobral)
Salvador Sobral loves to appear as a featured artist, and his latest feature is on a song by Ligados Às Máquinas. This group, whose name translates to Connected To Machine, describe themselves as a “wheelchair sampling orchestra”, with the musicians all members of the Cerebral Palsy Association of Coimbra. Having existed for over a decade, Ligados Às Máquinas have now released their debut album “Amor Dimensional” (Dimensional Love), with 9 collab-packed songs. Salvador Sobral appears on the somewhat jazzy, somewhat experimental, always interesting “Tarda, sim… tarda, não!” (Late, yes… late, no!).
Руслана – “Щедрик”
Okay so technically this is a Christmas song, but it slaps so it deserves the attention. “Щедрик” (Bountiful) is a Ukrainian New Year’s song dating back to 1901, but most people outside of Ukraine will instead recognize it as the basis for “Carol of the Bells”. Ruslana performed her version of the song, which of course involves some bombastic drums and grand production to support her magnificent voice, for Територія Різдва: Дух Нескорених (Territory of Christmas: Spirit of the Unconquered).
Charlotte Perrelli – “Home”
It’s been a long, long year. Now, at last Charlotte Perrelli is back “Home” on the round-up with some new music. It is another example of that melancholic-yet-uplifting jazzy sound that she has truly been making her own. Mattias Bylund (Perrelli’s “Love Is A Losing Game” cover, Benjamin Ingrosso, string arrangement on “Tattoo”) produced this cover of the Michael Bublé song of the same name.
Sertab Erener – “SAYGI1”
Technically there were a whole host of singles by Sertab Erener this month. This is thanks to the “SAYGI1” project, which as I understand it honours iconic Turkish artists by creating a big concert in which the artist is joined by others to sing through all the famous songs in their catalogue. The second artist to be honoured like this is Eurovision winner Sertab Erener. The concert features songs from across her discography, including of course her winning entry “Everyway That I Can”. The songs have been appearing as single releases on Spotify over time, which is why this gets featured in the round-up.
Kalush Orchestra feat. Харфанг – “Дівчата”
After a regular release last month, Kalush Orchestra once again return to the rich well of collabs. “Дівчата” (Girls) features fellow rapper Харфанг.
Loreen – “Gravity”
There probably are puns about “Gravity”, Wicked, and Loreen’s previous release “Warning Signs“, but I just can’t get them to work as I write this, so just joke amongst yourselves. Read all about the new music by the double Eurovision winner below:
