It’s the end of the world year as we know it! Releases have slowed down a little but some artists decided to save their best for now. They might be late for many a “best of the year” list, which is just an extra reason to celebrate these songs here. So let’s settle into this round-up of new music from Eurovision and beyond. This edition includes: the usual suspects, some fun surprises, an unusually busy winners section, and a page dedicated to the new music from 2024 that we at That Eurovision Site loved most!
If you want to jump straight to a certain section, here’s a list of pages, each filled to the brim with new music:
- The 2024 entries. Song of the month is here!
- The Winners
- Other Highlights (Song of the month and album of the month are here)
- Now That’s What I Call… The Extended Eurovision Universe (artists from NFs, JESC, intervals, and more)
- The Year That Was: The 2024 TES Highlights
The 2024 Entries
Jerry Heil – “СНІГ”
“СНІГ” (SNOW) is the title of the latest single by Jerry Heil, released ahead of her upcoming European tour. This feels like a bit of a new direction for the Ukrainian singer, despite it consisting of elements we have heard in many of her songs. Piano and strings power the verses, while the chorus brings in a beat. Jerry shows off her beautiful singing voice throughout. In short: this is really good in a way I was not expecting from the ever-excellent Jerry Heil! Song of the month!
MUSTII – “THE MAZE” (LP)
It is finally here! Following the release of the album’s title track in October, MUSTII’s new album “THE MAZE” is out now! The 11 piece effort also includes his Eurovision entry ” Before The Party’s Over” and sees the artist effortlessly go through a variety of styles. From the bombast of his Eurovision song, the odd rough-around-the-edges new wave of the title track, or the lighter, energetic “Tell The Kids It’s Alright“, there is something for everyone on this album. Personal highlight is the alt/indie-rock “MASSIVE LOVE INFECTION”.
Marisa Liz – “Mudar A Canção”
It’s an all-star cast for Marisa Liz‘ “Mudar A Canção” (Change The Song). It’s up here in the round-up courtesy of iolanda, but there are so many others on here too on this song in celebration of International Human Rights Day. So let’s quickly run through the others, shall we?
- Alex D’Alva (jury FdC 2023, interval FdC 2024)
- Bárbara Tinoco (FdC 2020 and ’23, JESC 2024 co-writer, round-up regular)
- Carlão (Founded Da Weasel, worked with FdC alums like Dapunksportif and Carolina Deslandes)
- Cláudia Pascoal (Eurovision 2018)
- Diogo Piçarra (FdC 2018)
- Luís Trigacheiro (Has worked with Salvador Sobral, IRMA, Milhanas)
- Neyna (big name in the Cape Verdean music scene and beyond)
- Paulo de Carvalho (Eurovision 1974. Yes, the man whose song was used to note the start of the Carnation Revolution!)
- Sara Correia (interval FdC 2022, jury FdC 2023)
- Simone de Oliveira (Eurovision 1965, 1969)
WINDOWS95MAN – “PAPERCLIP”
It’s not-quite-Clippy o’clock in the WINDOWS95MAN studio. “PAPERCLIP” feels… extremely German to me, and that is not just because there actually is some German in the song. If you like WINDOWS95MAN I think you 1) have already heard this and 2) love it. As was tradition with this kind of music in the 90s, the song also includes additional vocals hidden in the production credits section. This time, the operating system human was joined by singer Ulla Varis.
Osku Ärilä, Joel Bonsdorff, Nelli Matula, Henri Piispanen, Yannick Yamajako – “Yhtä matkaa”
Speaking of, how about some new music from Henri Piispanen? He is the voice actor of Zazu in the Finnish dub of Mufasa: The Lion King (Mufasa: Leijonakuningas). “Yhtä matkaa” (One Trip) is the one song Zazu gets to sing in, and is called “We Go Together” in the English version.
Marina Satti – “ANATOLI”
We fly from Finland to Greece for our next entry in the round-up. Marina Satti wants to feel some “ANATOLI” (LOVE) tonight on this surprising, some might even say odd, poprock track. Now usually I would include a link to the official version of the song on YouTube. I can’t for this because “ANATOLI” is only available there for Music Premium members, so you will have to make do with this Spotify embed instead, or this link that can send you onwards to some other big (and let’s be honest, better) streaming services.
Olly Alexander – “Archangel”
If you want some prime radio fodder (you decide whether that is positive or negative), Olly Alexander has you covered this month. It’s a sweet little song written by Olly and producer Danny L Harle (“Dizzy”, Dua Lipa, Caroline Polachek).
Nebulossa – “Bailar Hasta Morir”
Nebulossa are ready to “Bailar Hasta Morir” (Dance Until You Die). Will anyone be surprised to learn that this is a very danceable retro electropop track? This track differentiates itself from the rest of Nebulossa’s discography thanks to a wide array of sound effects and other production moments that appear frequently throughout the song, transporting me back to the early days of MTV.
İlkin Dövlətov – “Qal Sənə Qurban”, “Ay Saçı Burma”
It’s two pieces of new music in one month this December for İlkin Dövlətov. “Qal Sənə Qurban” (Stay, sacrifice to you) is a song originally from the 70s. İlkin’s version is an ever-so-slightly updated and modernized version of it, with İlkin-regular Vüqar Camalzadə doing the arrangement. The traditional “Ay Saçı Burma” (Moon Hair Twist) sees İlkin at what might be his most energetic yet as this song actually is something you can dance to. This might be one of my favourite songs by him so far. Here the arrangement was done by another regular of his, Rabil Səfərli.
Electric Fields – “Live in Concert” (LP)
It has been a very eventful year for Electric Fields. Now the duo close the year off with a live album. The imaginatively named “Live in Concert” is from a live recording in 2023. Zaachariaha Fielding and Michael Ross were joined on stage by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. As the year-long release wait implies, their Eurovision entry “One Milkali” is not on this recording, but don’t fret if you only know the band from Eurovision-adjacent activities: Australia Decides entry “2000 and WHATEVER” does make it on and sounds glorious in this arrangement.
LUNA – “A może”
Having gone through some “Personal Torture” last month, LUNA now releases “A może” (Maybe). We’ve done an article on this new music with everything there is to know about it, check it out below:
