One month after the end of Eurovision 2021, many countries are already looking to next year’s contest in Italy.
Joining that list is Ukraine, who confirmed to ESCToday that they will be back again in 2022 for the 17th appearance.
Ukraine in Eurovision 2021
Ukraine’s confirmation comes hot off the heels of Go_A’s massive success at Eurovision 2021 with “Shum”. They finished 2nd in the televote with 267 points and 5th overall with 364 points.
While their selection method for 2022 is yet to be confirmed, it is likely that broadcaster UA:PBC will return to the Vidbir format that was previously used to select its entrants. Go_A previously won Vidbir in 2020 and was internally re-selected for 2021 following the cancellation of Eurovision 2020.
Ukraine’s Eurovision Journey
Ukraine is one of the most successful nations in the modern era of Eurovision. They first participated in 2003 and went on to win the next contest in 2004 with Ruslana’s “Wild Dances”. They claimed victory again in 2016 with Jamala’s “1944”.
Aside from breaks in 2015 and 2019, Ukraine has qualified for the grand final in each of their appearances. This makes them the only country to have a 100% qualification streak. They have also notched ten Top 10 finishes in that time.
Ukraine has sent many iconic entries to the contest, including Ani Lorak’s “Shady Lady” and Verka Serduchka’s “Dancing Lasha Tumbai”.
And of course, their 2014 entry, Maryia Yaremchuk’s “Tick-Tock”, gave us the iconic man in a hamster wheel.
