Ahead of Dora 2024 taking place, Jazzi had the chance to speak with Alen Ðuras. Alen is participating in the second semi-final on February 23rd with the song “A Tamburitza Lullaby”.

Hi Alen, I would just like to start things off by asking you to introduce yourself?

Hello, I’m Alen. Live performances and making music are two of my favourite things. I grew up in the small town of Trogir on the Adriatic coast. Since I started singing and playing guitar as a kid, music has been in my blood. My career began with an application to The Voice Croatia in 2016, where I placed 3rd. Since then, I have performed around Croatia and the region, as well as appeared on many other music shows on Croatian national television.

Before we continue, let’s start with a quick icebreaker by just asking if there is one thing about yourself that not many people know about?

I have already been to Eurovision as a part of the Jacques Houdek team in 2017 in Kyiv. I sang backing vocals on his Eurovision entry “My Friend”. At that time, I was at the beginning of my music career, and it meant a lot to me. I had the opportunity to see how Eurovision works and what level is expected of performers, which I consider valuable knowledge.

For international Eurovision fans, this will be the first time they will get to know you, could you please tell us a bit more about yourself?

Aside from creating music, I’m really into escape rooms and solving mysteries. Sports and adrenaline experiences also get me excited – there’s just something about pushing limits and diving into that thrill that I can’t get enough of!

On a personal note, I’m quite reserved and tend to be on the shy side. Despite that, I cherish quality time with my close-knit circle of friends and family. When I manage to take a break from my musical endeavours, I find solace in exploring nature

Can I start off by asking, what made you want to participate in the Croatian Eurovision selection?

In my home, both Dora and Eurovision were eagerly watched from a young age. It was actually through watching Eurovision that my passion for music began. I distinctly remember when Doris Dragović performed at Eurovision with the song “Marija Magdalena”; I think I was around 5 years old at the time. Since then, I’ve been following it with great interest every year and hoping I could perform on that level myself someday.

Dora has always been on my mind as something I wanted to do. Having a great song and setting my schedule to have enough time to prepare made this year perfect. When I got accepted I was over the moon calling my family and friends. It made me really happy. I perceive it as a significant step forward in my career and I believe I am ready to take it.

You will be participating with the song “A Tamburitza Lullaby”, what the song is about and what would you like the audience to feel when listening to it?

The song dives into the story of a couple who decided to part ways, reminiscing about the sweetest moments they once shared. For me, the song echoes a personal belief – that every twist of fate has a purpose. Even when love stories don’t last, they shape us, making us better versions of ourselves.

Sure, I want the audience to vibe with the song and dance along, but beyond the beats, there’s a deeper meaning. It’s a shout-out to hope, a belief in a brighter love down the road. Life doesn’t stop after a breakup; instead, each experience becomes a lesson, pushing us forward. So, let’s enjoy the tune and groove, but let’s also carry that message of hope for the next chapter.

When I am sending this, we are only a few days away from the second semi-final. How are the preparations going for that?

As we approach the second semi-final just a few days away, preparations are in full swing and going well. Daily rehearsals have become a crucial part of our routine, entering the phase of costume rehearsals where I’m actively collaborating with my team to elevate every aspect of the performance. Having previously performed on Croatian national television, I’m well-acquainted with the concept of live shows, but I won’t deny that a hint of stage jitters, or “trema,” is still present. Nevertheless, it adds an exciting edge to the process as we work diligently to refine each detail. The fulfilment that comes from shaping and perfecting our performance is truly rewarding, and the energy within the team is palpable as we prepare for the upcoming show.

What would it mean for you to win Dora and represent your country at Eurovision?

Securing a win at Dora and representing Croatia at Eurovision would be a big deal, more like a dream come true. It’s not just about me; it’s about showing off Croatia’s awesome music and culture globally. Eurovision is this huge global music party, and winning Dora means I get to be part of it. I’d be excited to bring Croatia’s pride to Eurovision, and our pop song, flavored with the vibes of the traditional tamburitza, would offer an authentic mix of old and new, giving everyone a fresh sound to enjoy! My ultimate hope is to see Croatia make it into the Eurovision finals, carrying our cultural flair and musical vibes to a broader audience.

Moving onto Eurovision, what are your earliest memories of the contest, Do you have any favourite songs? Either from Croatia or from any other country

As I mentioned earlier, I grew up watching Eurovision with my family, and I am a huge fan. Over the years, there have been numerous great songs and memorable performances. However, my favorites include tracks like “Can’t Go On” by Robin Bengtsson, the captivating artistry of Mahmood with “Soldi,” and regional classics such as “Lejla” by Hari Mata Hari, Marija Šerifović’s powerful “Molitva,” and Željko Joksimović’s soulful “Nije ljubav stvar.” And, of course,, Jacques Houdek’s performance of “My Friend,” in which I had the privilege of being a part, holds a special place in my Eurovision memories.

I have read that you were on The Voice Croatia, has this helped prepare you in anyway for Dora?

A considerable amount of time has passed since my involvement in The Voice Croatia. Nevertheless, the impact of that experience remains deeply rooted in my musical journey. Being on The Voice has been an invaluable chapter that significantly contributed to my preparation, not only for Dora but for my entire musical career.

The show provided me with a platform to refine my vocal skills, receive constructive feedback from experienced mentors, and navigate the dynamics of performing in front of a live audience. The Voice also opened doors for incredible networking opportunities. I had the privilege of connecting with experienced mentors, fellow artists, and young, talented colleagues whom I still collaborate with today in the industry.

After The Voice, I continued performing, and this ongoing journey has played a pivotal role in shaping the artist I am today. The real-world experience gained from subsequent performances has further refined my musical style and strengthened my readiness for the unique challenges that Dora presents.

I believe that The Voice serves as a fantastic springboard for any young artist willing to put in the work.

After Dora 2024 what is next for you? Any new singles, albums? Or touring?

After Dora 2024, I’m really looking forward to keeping the music alive right here in Croatia. I plan to hit the stage, connect with the crowd, and bring some good vibes through live performances. And here’s the scoop: I’ve got a brand-new album in the works, aiming to drop it by the end of the year. It’s a big deal for me. On a personal note, this year is shaping up to be pretty exciting all around.

What is one thing that you have learnt from taking part in the national final, that you will take with you going forward?

As of now, I’m still uncertain about advancing to the national final from the semi-finals. However, with the semi-finals just three days away, the anticipation is building up. I can tell you that the experience has been incredible. It’s the most I’ve ever prepared for a performance, and the journey itself has been a valuable lesson. I love working with a team, giving attention to so many details, and enjoying every moment of doing what I love the most—bringing music and entertainment to people. No matter the result, I am happy that I will participate in Dora for the first time, as it has been a goal of mine. The dedication and effort put into this opportunity have taught me the importance of thorough preparation, and I’m genuinely excited to showcase my passion on the Dora stage.

Ahead of Dora 2024, we would like to wish Alen Ðuras the best of luck in the semi-final on Friday.
