🇸🇮 RTV SLO’s council requests Israeli omission from Eurovision

RTVSLO - the public broadcaster of Slovenia

Less than a fortnight after it was announced that 38 countries would participate at Eurovision 2025, it is now reported that Slovenia’s RTV SLO has requested that Israel not participate in Basel.

Slovenian fansite Eurovizija has reported that the council that oversees Slovenia’s public service broadcaster has requested that the management of RTV SLO make the request to the EBU to omit Israel from participation at next year’s Eurovision. The council meeting, which pertains to the governance and funding of the broadcaster, made the mandatory demand to be taken immediately.

Three motions

The council meeting set forth three proposals for what to happen with Slovenia with regards to Israeli participation.

  • Resolution One: Would see the request for Israeli omission, and would demand that Slovenia withdraw in the event Israel remains.
  • Resolution Two: Would see the request for Israeli omission, and would demand that the Israeli performance not be broadcast in Slovenia.
  • Resolution Three: Would see the request for Israeli omission, and demands that the management of RTV SLO keep the council informed of the status of the request.

Of the three proposals, the third one carried. At present we do not know if such a request has been made to the EBU.

Slovenia’s Eurovision journey

In 1993, Slovenia made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest with 1X Band and the song “Tih deževen dan”, which placed 22nd. Since their debut, they have participated 28 times – of which, 16 were where they qualified for the Grand Final.

Slovenia’s recent Eurovision participation saw them being represented by Raiven, who sang the song “Veronika”. Performing at the first semi-final, Raiven placed 9th, therefore qualifying for the final for the second consecutive time. At the final, Slovenia finished in 23rd place, receiving 27 points. Of these, 15 came from the jury and 12 from the televote.
