Due to health problems, Grēta Grantiņa has withdrawn from Supernova 2025. Her song “Monster” will not be replaced and Supernova will proceed with 19 acts.

Grēta withdraws due to health issues

Supernova’s semifinal will take place this Saturday, February 1st. “Monster” was originally drawn to perform fourteenth in the running order; due to the last-minute nature of the withdrawal, she will not be replaced. The final six songs will perform one slot earlier in the running order, with a total of nineteen songs vying for a place in Supernova’s final.

Guntars Gulbiņš, the producer of Supernova, thanked Grēta for her song and her hard work so far, and expressed hope that she would return to Supernova in the future.

The 2025 Eurovision season has been characterized by an unusual amount of national final withdrawals, although Grēta’s is only the second withdrawal due to health reasons.

Latvia’s Eurovision journey

Latvia made their Eurovision debut in 2000, finishing 3rd with “My Star” by Brainstorm. They have performed at every contest since and quickly won in 2002. Marie N sang “I Wanna,” scoring 176 points and bringing Eurovision to Riga. Since then, Latvia has finished in the top 10 two more times, in 2005 and 2015.

Latvia’s most recent entry on the Eurovision stage was Dons, who performed “Hollow”. The song qualified from the semi-final, bringing Latvia to the grand final for the first time since 2016. In the Grand Final Dons finished in 16th with 64 points, 26 from the public vote and 38 from the national juries.

Latvia has used Supernova to select their Eurovision entry since 2015, with the exception of Samanta Tina’s internal selection in 2021 after the 2020 contest, for which she had qualified, was cancelled. Supernova‘s tenth edition will start with a semifinal on 1 February and conclude on 8 February; 19 songs will fight for the opportunity to represent Latvia at Eurovision 2025 in Basel, Switzerland.
