Now That’s What I Call… The Extended Eurovision Universe

As Eurovision fans (and some who aren’t) know, Eurovision neither starts nor ends with the main contest. From National Final season introducing the world to new and exciting artists, to former Junior Eurovision artists, to the big- and small-name songwriters and producers that work behind the scenes, people from all over the music industry make Eurovision the amazing thing that it is. Here is some of the best new music by Eurovision-adjacent acts.

Theo Evan – “Fuego”

We start things in this section with a 2025 representative! After all, until they have performed at Eurovision anything could still happen, so they get to shine in this section until then. Or we do 2020 part 2, but let’s not even contemplate that possibility. Anyhow, Cyprus’ Theo Evan was one of the interval acts during Greece’s national final and showed off his cover of Eurovision fan-favourite entry “Fuego”, which has been the best Cypriot result in the contest to date. Read more about the song here:

Blåsemafian- “Tom’s Diner”

While Blåsemafian are here thanks to their MGP participation, the Scandinavian group is perhaps best known for their musical support on TV and collabing with artists such as Madcon and Marcus & Martinus. “Tom’s Diner” is a cover of the Suzanne Vega classic, and this version has a very cool energy. It’s almost deep house at the start but as the song progresses it picks up and drops different elements continuously, making every section of the song its own experience while still feeling like a coherent whole.

YAKTAK – “Розганяємось”

“Розганяємось” (We accelerate) is the latest by Yaktak, and it adds some excellent electric guitar to his hip-hop sound. The music does a great job evoking that moment of tension where everything speeds up and you finally kiss that one person.

Isaac Sene – “Palava ote” feat. Sara Bee

Isaac Sene teams up with Sara Bee to create this classy, classic, yet modern lovejam called “Palava ote” (Burning grip), which is all about the burning grip of memories of some hot summer nights.

Guadi Galego & Tanxugueiras – “Inconformismo”

Tanxugueiras have always been proudly themselves, and their latest release sees them continue with that. “Inconformismo” (Nonconformity) is an absolutely astounding piece of alt-pop created together with Guadi Galego that I just can’t stop listening to. There is something extremely dreamy about this song, which is only the latest moment of collaboration between two of the biggest names in Galician music. Track of the month!

Roger Padrós – “T’hi voldries quedar

I have to admit that I never expected to really love a a Roger Padrós song, but here we are. “T’hi voldries quedar (Would you like to stay) feels like the warmest hug on the coldest day, and genuinely makes me a bit emotional every time I listen to it. Just really, really good. The song was accompanied by an EP of the same name that combines this with three other songs the artist released over the last few months.

Jan Majewski – “Zaryzykuję”

And now for something completely different. Jan Majewski presents some swaggering rock with “Zaryzykuję” (I will take a chance), and it is just a straight-up good time. So put this on, amp yourself up, and take a chance on that one thing you’ve been wanting to do or say for all this time.

MELA – “Aguarelas” (LP)

From last year’s FdC indie entry “Água” to new and rocky “Eco” or dark-pop tinged album closer “Amor com amor”, this new album by Mela is excellent. “Aguarelas” (Watercolour) sees the singer create 9 songs as gorgeous as a painting, all adding up to a great gallery of new music.

Rogerio Charraz, Joana Alegre – “Mariana”

Festival da Canção’s Joana Alegre joins Rogerio Charraz and José Fialho Gouveia for the project Anónimos de Abril (The Anonymous of April). “Mariana” is the first song to be released of upcoming album “12 rostos da resistência à ditadura” (12 faces of resistance to dictatorship). The project and the album will bring a sound and a voice to stories inspired by those who resisted the dictatorship, and the people who helped shape Portuguese freedom during the Carnation Revolution and thereafter.

Felicia Lu – “She”

It’s another good slice of moody pop music from German fan favourite Felicia Lu with “She”. It’s part of the second half of her upcoming album “Bittersweet”, with all songs from the first half (“Bitter”) having seen the light of day by December.

FRIDA GOLD – “NEUER TAG”

It’s a “NEUER TAG” (NEW DAY), and Frida Gold is taking that opportunity with both hands. This song is all about new beginnings, saying goodbye to painful moments and being ready to embrace the new. A gorgeous song that starts very slow and delicate, but halfway through transforms into an indie pop anthem.

Abor & Tynna – “Bittersüß” (LP)

Your eyes are not deceiving you, that is three German national final entrants in one round-up! ABor & Tynna are currently in the running for Eurovision through Germany’s Chefsache and its bizarre final format, and in the meantime have released a whole album. Potential Eurovision entry “Baller” closes off the project, while the rest of “Bittersüß” (Bittersweet) sees the sibling duo travel through a variety of energies and genres. Opener “Parallele Linien” (Parallel Lines) is a particular highlight for me.

AMP (Antsud Metal Project) – “Suvetar”

The Antsud Metal Project soldiers on with “Suvetar” (Summer girl). This song sounds as grand as the rest of their discography, although I would describe the energy as more operatic rather than the more cinematic feeling I usually get from their songs. A great track.

Carrousel – “Éclaircies” (LP)

And to imagine I almost missed that they were making new music. Recent round-up mainstays Carrousel presented their new album “Éclaircies” (Clarifications) this month, and I couldn’t be happier. Chock-full of indiepop chanson from dreamy opener “Je rêve”, the retro grooves on “Vendredis pluvieux”, forever banger “En silence“, the titular “Éclaircies” one through three on which Léonard also sings, and everything in between, this is just a great album. Album of the month!

Leander Kills – “Sárga rózsa”, “Oh, mondd”

Back again and giving us two songs this month are Hungarian rockers Leander Kills. While their latest album released in October, they clearly still wanted more. The group found inspiration in the band Illés, a 60s Hungarian rockband. A three-song EP will be complete in March, but for now we have the ominous bass of “Sárga rózsa” and the pure speed of “Oh, mondd” (Oh, tell me).

Joan Thiele – “Joanita” (LP)

I don’t engage in Sanremo, but I still desperately wanted Joan Thiele to win. While that wish didn’t come true, she did decide to treat us to a full album with “Joanita”. From mysterious, retro opener “La forma liquida” to the ever-evolving indie-poprock on Sanremo entry “Eco” or the downtempo altpop balladry of “Volto di donna”, there is lots to dig into and enjoy here.

Anne Fagermo – “Bruk og kast”

“Bruk og kast” (Use and discard) is the title of the new song by Anne Fagermo. It’s another lovely piece of music by the Norwegian, with her once again leaning into her Americana influences while building on it, especially with that prominent electric guitar in the back-half of the track.

Randi Oline and Oscar Zia – “Venter du”

“Venter du” (Are you waiting) is the question on Randi Oline’s lips on this song that walks the tightrope between being dreamy and haunting. Oscar Zia’s voice grounds the track against Randi’s more ethereal vocals, providing a stunning contrast when he first enters the picture and then a truly gorgeous extra layer when he sings together with Randi on the chorus.
