Eurovision in Basel is just over a month away. In the lead-up to the start of rehearsals, we will get to know a bit more about this year’s artists, their discography, and their Eurovision 2025 journey so far. Up first, we will preview Iceland’s VÆB .

VÆB’s Eurovision Journey So Far

VÆB was selected to represent Iceland after winning the national final “Söngvakeppnin 2025”, securing the most votes in the final. Late last month it was determined that VÆB will be opening the first semi-final of Eurovision 2025 on May 11.

Iceland will participate in Eurovision 2025 with the entry “RÓA”, which was Gunnar Björn Gunnarsson, Hálfdán Helgi Matthíasson, Ingi Þór Garðarsson, and Matthías Davíð Matthíasson.

What do we think of “RÓA”?

The team at That Eurovision Site has reacted to Iceland’s entry for Basel. Kittens gave her thoughts on “RÓA”, which you can check out below.

In addition to Kittens’ reaction to “RÓA”, you can also find out what the other members of the team thought of Iceland’s entry right here.

Who are VÆB?

VÆB consists of two brothers Matthías Davíð Matthíasson and Hálfdán Helgi Matthíasson, and have taking up music at a very young age, especially as they come from a family of musicians, with their father being a organist, saxophone teacher and choir director, and their mother being a singer and singing teacher.

Taking part in music competitions is not something new to the duo, having won the Icelandic singing competition ‘The Christmas Star’ when they were age 12, as well as participating in Söngvakeppnin in 2024 with “Bíómynd”, which made the final of the competition.

Iceland’s Eurovision Journey

Iceland made its debut on the Eurovision stage in 1986, finishing 16th with the song “Gleðibankinn” (Bank of Fun) by ICY. In their 35 appearances, Iceland has finished in top 10 an impressive 7 times. Their best result to date is second place, which they have achieved twice. The first time was in 1999, where Selma Björnsdóttir received 146 points for her performance of “All Out of Luck”. The second time was in 2009, with Yohanna singing “Is It True” and receiving 218 points.

2010 returnee Hera Björk represented Iceland with “Scared of Heights” at the 2024 contest. She placed last in the first semi-final, scoring only three points.
