Spain has chosen its next Junior Eurovision star – and it’s a familiar face from the theatre stage.
From theatre stage to Junior Eurovision spotlight
Spain has officially chosen its representative for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2025: 14-year-old Gonzalo Pinillos. The announcement was made during a press conference held on July 23 at Torrespaña in Madrid.
Gonzalo, who is known for his role in the musical Los chicos del coro, was selected from a pool of 270 applicants. He will take to the stage in Tbilisi, Georgia, on 13 December.
Gonzalo’s passion and vision
Gonzalo comes from Madrid and has built an impressive résumé in the world of musical theatre, with performances in School of Rock, The Chorus, and Intérprete. Off stage, he enjoys basketball, surfing, skiing, swimming, and chess – even reaching the finals of the Madrid regional chess championship.
Speaking at the press event, Gonzalo shared his excitement:
“I’m excited to represent Spain, to see the staging, and to be able to express emotions through the song I’ll be given. I enjoy interpreting songs – musical theatre has given me that: the chance to tell a story while singing.”
He also expressed a wish for a ballad with meaning:
“I’d like the song to be a ballad, with a message and beautiful emotion – and if I can play the piano in part of it, that would be amazing.”
Sergio Calderón, Director of RTVE, praised Gonzalo’s talent:
“This boy has something special – he captivates when he sings and reaches people’s hearts. We’re going to work together as a team to help him shine on the Eurovision stage.”
César Vallejo, Spain’s new Head of Delegation, added that work is already underway:
“We’re going to take advantage of all of Gonzalo’s strengths and create a song tailored for him. There might be a few surprises in the composition.”
The song Gonzalo will perform in Tbilisi is expected to be announced in the coming months.
Spain’s Junior Eurovision journey
Spain has taken part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest a total of 9 times, with their first participation coming in the first edition of the Contest in 2003. In the initial Contest, Spain was represented by Sergio singing “Desde el cielo”, and at the close of voting Spain finished in second place, earning 125 points. Spain would go on to win the next edition of the show with María Isabel’s “Antes Muerte Que Sencilla”, finishing with 171 points.
Spain hosted the 2024 contest after 2023 winner France turned down hosting rights. Their hometown girl was Chloe DelaRosa, who sang “Como La Lola”; she received 80 points from the jury and 64 from the online vote, combining for a total score of 144 points and sixth place.
