Now That’s What I Call… The Extended Eurovision Universe
As any Eurovision megafan knows, Eurovision neither starts nor ends with the main contest. From National Final season introducing the world to new and exciting artists, to former Junior Eurovision artists, to the big-name songwriters and producers that work behind the scenes, people from all over the music industry make Eurovision the amazing thing that it is. Here are some of the best new releases by Eurovision-adjacent acts:
Sara James – “Hula Hoop”
Over on the JESC side of the Eurovision Universe, Junior Eurovision 2021 contestant Sara James presents her new single “Hula Hoop”. It’s a summery track that still feels fresh thanks to Sarta’s great voice and some stellar production work by co-writer Lewis Gardiner (who has previously worked with Megan Thee Stallion and Sophie and the Giants, among others).
BESS – “KÄDET YLÖS” (LP)
UMK 2022 fan favourite BESS is telling us all to put our “KÄDET YLÖS” (HANDS UP) on her new album. The 14 track piece features 8 new and 6 previously released songs, including her UMK entry “Ram Pam Pam” and recent single “Rakastan en rakasta“.
Samira Manners – “How-To-Be-Decent Guide”
Samira Manners was a personal favourite of mine in Melodifestival 2022, and now she is back with her first song since January’s “Not An Answer“. Musically this is unmistakably Samira Manners, while lyrically she sings about being so done with someone that she feels the need to offer them a “How-To-Be-Decent Guide”. Samira co-wrote the song with the prolific Fredrik Andersson (perhaps best known for Frans’ “If I Were Sorry”).
ELLA A – “Así”
ELLA A found many a fan during Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix this year with her song “Waist,” and now has released “Así” (So). The singer put together a star-studded group of people to write the song together with her, including Norway’s 2012 Eurovision representative Tooji. This song sees ELLA A experiment with and add to the Brazilian elements that were already present in “Waist”.
