Ahead of Eurovision Song Contest – Das deutsche Finale 2024 on Friday night, Daniel had the chance to speak to Floryan about his participation in the competition. He’ll be competing with the song “Scars” after he won “Ich will zum ESC!” and received the wildcard spot.
Hi Floryan, I would just like to start things off by asking you to introduce yourself?
Hi, I’m Flo, 28 years old and I’m from Künzelsau (a small town in the south of Germany) and I’m currently studying “Music & Creative Industries” at the Popakademie in Mannheim.
Before we continue, let’s start with a quick icebreaker by just asking if there is one thing about yourself that not many people know about?
I’m addicted to Nutella and an encyclopaedia of pop culture knowledge.
For international Eurovision fans, this will be the first time they will get to know you, could you please tell us a bit more about yourself?
I love the Eurovision Song Contest and have dreamed my whole life of being part of the German preliminary round or the ESC itself.
My musical journey began in a children’s choir. Over time, I completed my A-levels at a school with a music programme.
I’ve played music at weddings and with cover bands.
Can I start off by asking, what made you want to participate in Ich Will Zum ESC?
I applied for “I want to go to the ESC!” quite spontaneously and purely by chance. I would never have expected to be invited to the selection.
What was your initial reaction to winning, and has it properly sunk in yet?
I didn’t even realise the victory at first. I’ve never been so stunned in my life as I was after the decision was announced. Now I’m more than happy and I’m really looking forward to the “German final” this week.
You will be participating with the song “Scars”, what the song is about and what would you like the audience to feel when listening to it?
The song is about mental and physical scars that have made us stronger over the course of our lives and made us what we are now. The song is also about finding your own beauty in these scars and embodying it with confidence. My goal is for the listener to identify with the song and feel embraced and accepted.
When I am sending this, we are only a few days away from the final. How are the preparations going for that?
At the moment we are working on a new staging, a look and more stable vocals for the ‘German Final’. On the whole, however, I want to score again with authenticity and great emotion and remain true to myself.
What would it mean for you to win Das Deutsche Finale and represent your country at Eurovision?
It would be an absolute childhood dream come true and a huge honour for me to carry the German flag to Malmö.
We saw you perform live at Ich Will Zum – Are you going to keep your performance looking the same?
We will definitely use the bigger stage in a different way and completely rework the look of the performance. Be curious!
Moving onto Eurovision, what are your earliest memories of the contest, Do you have any favourite songs? Either from Germany or from any other country
I have a lot of favourite Eurovision songs.
From Helena Paparizou’s ‘My Number One’, Eleni Foureira’s ‘Fuego’, S10’s ‘De Diepte’ and the contributions from Maneskin, Cornelia Jakobs and co, there are a few favourites.
I’ll probably never forget Germany’s triumph with Lena in particular.
Scars is the first song in your Spotify library, can we expect to see some more soon?
I will definitely continue to work on my own music to infest my Spotify library. As things stand at the moment, I can’t say when the next songs will be released.
Last question – what is one thing that you have learnt from taking part in the national final, that you will take with you going forward?
That I can confidently believe in myself and that it is always worth fighting for your dreams. Because at some point you will achieve them.
Who is Floryan?
28-year-old Floryan is a singer from Soutbern Germany, who won the Ich Will Zum ESC! Contest, winning him a place in Das Deutsche Finale, where he will compete with the song “Scars”.
Germany’s Eurovision Journey
Germany has been part of Eurovision since the beginning, debuting in 1956. Their debut entries were Walter Andreas Schwarz’s “Im Wartesaal zum großen Glück” and Freddy Quinn’s “So geht das jede Nacht”. Germany has appeared at every Eurovision except for 1996, which means they have been at more Contests than any other country. They have a long history of success in Eurovision, finishing in the top 3 an impressive 13 times. Germany has won the contest twice: Nicole won in 1982 with her song “Ein bißchen Frieden”, taking home 161 points. Their second win came in 2010, when Lena scored 246 points with her song “Satellite”.
Germany’s most recent Eurovision entry was Lord of the Lost with “Blood and Glitter”. As Germany is part of the Big 5, they automatically qualified for the Grand Final. In the Final, the song received 18 points and finished last – 26th – for the second year in a row.
