Portugal is gearing up their preparations for Festival da Canção 2024. As artists look ahead to the national final, which began on February 24th, Rory speaks to Leo Middea. He is vying to represent Portugal in Malmö with his song “Doce Mistério”.

Together, Leo and Rory talk about his song “Doce Mistério”. He also describes his pride in being a Brazilian in the competition. As well as this, he addresses the hate he has received for his song, and his overall love for world cultures, thanks to his time in Argentina. He also offers a message to his international fans, and offers recommendations if you like his song.
Who is Leo Middea?
Leo Middea is a 28-year-old singer-songwriter, born in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. Middea shot to fame in his native country, becoming one of the biggest hitmakers of his generation in Brazil. However, his music took him to Argentina, and later – Portugal – where he currently lives. He already has released a number of albums and EPs, which have charted within Brazil and other Lusophone countries. His entry into Festival da Canção 2024 – “Doce Mistério” – was written by Leo himself.
Portugal’s Eurovision journey
Portugal debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest with António Calvário’s “Oração” in 1964. Since then, Portugal has participated in the competition 54 times – appearing the final 45 times. Their only win in the competition came in 2017 with Salvador Sobral, performing his heart-wrenching song “Amar Pelos Dois”.
Portugal’s most recent participation was with Mimicat with the song “Ai, coração”. Mimicat managed to qualify for the Grand Final and once there, she finished in 23rd place. She received a total of 59 points, of which 43 points came from the jury and 16 points came the televote.
