🇮🇹 Carlo Conti will not host Sanremo Giovani 2024 qualifiers

Speaking on Rai’s TG1, Conti revealed that he will not be hosting the contest, as well as announcing that the 24 big artists for Sanremo 2025 will be announced in December.

Conti will not host Rai 2 shows

Conti, who was speaking about the upcoming edition of Sanremo Giovani on Rai 1’s news show TG1, stated that he would not be hosting the five shows prior to the competition on 18th December, saying:

“There is some great news about the New Proposals: this year we will do a sort of parallel talent show that will lead us to discover the four who will then arrive at the Ariston in February. We will do five evenings on Rai 2, maybe in a few weeks I’ll also tell you who will host – because I won’t host those. So we’ll tell you how we’ll slowly get over the course of these five evenings to the selection of the best who will arrive at the festival as New Proposals 2025″.

Due to changes made by Conti, winners of Sanremo Giovani will no longer be part of the main section of Sanremo, as they were this year.

During the same broadcast, Conti also revealed that he was in the process of listening through songs submitted to the Big Artist section of Sanremo 2025. He noted there was a wide range of submissions, and the 24 artists will be announced on TG1 in December.

Conti was announced as the artistic director for Sanremo 2025 back in June following the departure of Amadeus, with the 63 year old reprising the position he held between 2015 and 2017.

What is Festival di Sanremo?

Italy’s renowned Festival di Sanremo is, in many ways, the original Eurovision–the contest we know and love was modeled after it, after all! First broadcast in 1951, it is the longest-running annual TV music competition in the world.

Sanremo was developed as a way to revitalize the city of Sanremo’s economy and reputation after the Second World War, and has since split into two smaller contests: the “Big Artists” section, whose winner gets first refusal to represent Italy in Eurovision, and the “Newcomers” section, first included in 1984. Scores are determined through public voting and two groups of juries, and the festival takes place across five nights.

Italy’s Eurovision Journey

Italy has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest since the very beginning and have always been considered a powerhouse in the contest. The country has won the contest on three occasions in 1964, 1990 and 2021. Italy withdrew after 1997, returning again in 2011 with Raphael Gualazzi who sang ‘Madness Of Love’. Raphael placed second in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest after scoring 189 points.

Italy’s most recent entry in 2024 was “La Noia” by Angelina Mango. At the close of voting, Italy scored a total of 268 points in the Eurovision 2024 Grand Final, placing 7th. Of these, 164 points came from the juries, whilst the remaining 104 points came from the televote.
