A report from the Dutch newspaper Het Parool suggests that the Netherlands may participate at Eurovision 2025. 2024 representative Joost Klein would seemingly the favourite to represent them in Basel should they participate.
The Netherlands’ Actions Post Eurovision 2024
Following the 2024 contest, which saw representative Joost Klein disqualified due to an alleged incident backstage of the second semi-final, Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS publicly raised its concerns with the EBU. AVROTROS released a statement in June saying that until “structural adjustments” had been made, they would keep participation at Eurovision “under consideration”. A report from RTL Boulevard suggested that AVROTROS would decide on participation in September. Then, the EBU gave them an extension to November. This report from Het Parool suggests that AVROTROS is satisfied with the EBU and is willing to participate in Basel.
Joost Klein to return?
Het Parool reports that should the Netherlands participate at Eurovision 2025, Joost Klein is the apparent favourite to return. The newspaper alleges that AVROTROS has already spoken to Joost about returning to the contest. According to the paper, Klein is the favourite because some believe that he should be given the chance to “finish the job” and because other artists are “hesitant” to perform at the contest next year. Het Parool also believes that AVROTROS would see Klein returning to the contest as confirmation that he was wrongly disqualified in Malmö.
Netherlands’ Eurovision History
The Netherlands are one of the founding countries of the ESC. They performed the very first song ever on the Eurovision stage back in 1956. While the result of “De Vogels van Holland” is unknown, the Netherlands have garnered 5 wins, with their most recent in 2019. However the Netherlands are also known to have had the longest ever non qualification streak in the semi-final era. They missed out on the final a whopping 8 times between 2005 and 2012.
Joost Klein represented the Netherlands in 2024 with the song “Europapa”. While he was ultimately disqualified, he would have made it to the final, placing second in his semifinal with 182 points.
